About this listen

Author Jenny Valentine earned a chorus of critical praise with this dark and humorous debut novel.

Fifteen year- old Lucas Swain hasn't seen his father for five years. One day, his dad just vanished - and nobody else seems too concerned. Things get even stranger when Lucas discovers an urn. The ashes inside are a woman named Violet, and she has messages from the beyond to share.

Critic reviews

"Everyday quirkiness brings the secondary characters to life as distinct individuals, and fortuitous turns in the plot lead to the answers to Lucas's critical questions. Charmingly told, this mystery manages to be both frothy and nourishing." ( Kirkus)

Seeing your parents for who they are

Funny and sweet YA novel about a boy dealing with a father who disappears. The humor kept the mood light even while dealing with heavy subjects. There is a subplot involving the main character's ability to see ghosts, but the supernatural element never really went anywhere and the story could have worked just fine without it. The narrator has a thick British accent authentic to the character and he spoke with a nice rythm. some people might find him hard to understand. I would recommend listening to the sample before purchase.
