About this listen

Award-winning author Melina Marchetta reopens the story of the group of friends from her acclaimed novel Saving Francesca - but five years have passed, and now it's Thomas Mackee who needs saving. After his favorite uncle was blown to bits on his way to work in a foreign city, Tom watched his family implode. He quit school and turned his back on his music and everyone that mattered, including the girl he can't forget. Shooting for oblivion, he's hit rock bottom, forced to live with his single, pregnant aunt; work at the Union pub with his former friends; and reckon with his grieving, alcoholic father. Tom's in no shape to mend what's broken. But what if no one else is either? An unflinching look at family, forgiveness, and the fierce inner workings of love and friendship, The Piper's Son masterfully redefines what it means to go home again.

Fantastic.

What did you love best about The Piper's Son?

The story, the characters...pretty much everything.

Who was your favorite character and why?

I loved Tom, and enjoyed revisiting the characters from Saving Francesca. Interesting to see where everyone was at in life, 5 years later.

Have you listened to any of Michael Finney’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

I would love to listen to more by him!

4.5 Stars!

I don’t think I’ve ever equally laughed AND cried as much as I did with this story and I loved every minute of it.

In the book blurb, The Piper's Son was described as Tom’s story, but it's really about the Finch-Mackees, Tom's family. The story was told through Tom and his Aunt Georgie's POV. Like the Author's Jellicoe Road, it took a moment for me to find my rhythm in the story-telling, but once I did, it became a moving story about Tom and his family dealing with the fallout of their uncle/brother Joe's tragic death. Marchetta manages to develop the stories of multiple family members, their pasts, Joe’s impact on their lives, and their recovery from grief without making the story feel disjointed and askew. I felt everything. I was ugly crying one moment and then giggling the next. Like Jellicoe Road, The Piper's Son is bound to become another all-time favorite.

The audio presentation was fantastic. This was one of those rare times that I felt that the audio enhanced the experience.
