Slooooowwww, many many extra words.
No doubt some call this a "lush Southern ghost story." "Lush" in a review generally translates, in my view, as "way too verbose." It sure does here; tho I enjoyed the many descriptions of life & land & hills & fog & mist & etc of the South, where I lived for many years, Cady can take up 4-5 pages just describing one verse of a song being sung or 10 pages for the protagonist to drive across a small town, at night, where nothing happens in the town or in the car or to the protagonist. The ghost sorta doesn't do much beyond providing a frame for the plot & characters, except for an exceptionally gory scene about 2/3 of the way thru, & it's very out-of-keeping with the rest of the book.
I sometimes say I like Grover Gardner's voice & his outstanding readings so much that I'd listen to him read a phone book. This wasn't quite that boring, but at times it came really, really close. I wouldn't have finished it if I hadn't had a bad insomnia night, & kept listening just to have something to do.
