About this listen

Young fae girls are disappearing.

Layla has never belonged to the fairy realm - at least, half of her hasn’t. She’s never known anyone with human blood, not even her father. When she was three, the dragon Fauth attacked the fairy festival, murdering her fae mum & stepfather. Frankly, some fairies think she should’ve been eaten too.

As she grew, despite being called names like “fuman” for being a half-blood, she’s discovered that being half-human isn’t terrible. She may lack magic, but she is immune to iron sickness, and she can wield a sword with elven skill.

Magic in the human world is disastrous.

Sixteen years later, when Layla’s half-sister is kidnapped and taken through a portal to the forbidden human realm, Layla rushes to the rescue. She’s older and stronger, and she’s not about to let her last living family member be taken from her without a fight.

Only someone who belongs to both worlds can find the truth.

The portal spits her out in the Royal Mile in Edinburgh, but neither her sister or the kidnapper are anywhere to be found. Stuck in a world she only knows from school books, Layla forges unlikely alliances to find her sister. As she becomes tangled in the dark world of fairy trafficking, magic harvesting, and murder, Layla will have to find the strength within if she is to survive and save her sister.

Interesting Fae story that definitely keeps you ho

Very interesting tale that had me engrossed from the start. The narrator's Scottish brogue added an extra layer of both realism and enjoyment.

Characters are well fleshed out and plot runs smoothly. I can't wait to go listen to book two.

Fun exciting adventure

Layla and Ian are both relatable characters so I instantly liked both of them. We’ve got fairies dragons and more crossing over from the fae world to the underground of Edinburg Scotland’s human world. I have visited and love Mary”s Close so I thought the detail was vivid and accurate. Can’t wait for the next book to see what Layla and Ian get up to next. Ruth Urquhart did a great job with the narration her accent was perfect for this book

Cute book

The characters were somewhat interesting. They lacked some personality. Like the Dragon. Good story line.

I love the lore

There was so much about this book that honestly worked. I loved the setting of the whole story. I think if it took place in any other setting, it wouldn't have worked as much. All of the surroundings truly fit and I enjoyed it. The story itself was very unique also. I really enjoyed the mystery behind what was happening to the other fairies and the mixture of witches and dragons. The pacing of the novel was good but there were certain things that felt rush. If the book was a little longer and certain circumstances took a little more time - it would have been more successful for me.

One of the issues I had was how she didn't have magic BUT WAIT, she actually did the whole time and could use it almost perfectly. While I loved the fact that she didn't have magic in the beginning (because that's what really made her character develop) it was almost instant that her magic returned and she knew exactly what to do with it. Maybe it was because she is a fairy and it comes naturally to them, but this bothered me just a little. The other aspect that I had an issue with was how fast the task team just accepted all of this supernatural/fantasy things. I mean, I would LOVE for all this to be true but it would still be a little hard to believe.... and they barely questioned it. Them accepting everything helped move the story along but I wish the task force would have resisted just a little bit in order to build them up and make it a little more believable.

Besides that, I really enjoyed everything. It was a faster paced read which helped me fly through the book. Each event led me right into the next and it was nice that there weren't that long of breaks. Even during the slower parts in the book, they were never boring which helped me keep my interest in the main story.

I really did enjoy the characters. Layla was a fantastic protagonist. I loved her character and her dedication to her people - even though they ostracized her. Layla is exactly what I look for in a main character and she was perfect. All of the characters throughout this novel fit perfectly in the story.

AUDIO REVIEW (Please note the narration does not affect my rating on the story)
Ruth was PERFECT for this story. What I really loved was her accent. It was just enough to help really set the story since it took place in Edinburgh but it wasn't heavy enough where I couldn't understand. She really enveloped the story and performed it excellent. I'm so glad she was chosen for this story and it would definitely be an audio I recommend.

Enjoyable story, great narration

I enjoyed the way Ruth Urquhart brought these characters to life and I just love her Scottish accents! I could tell who was who very easily which was brilliant.

I liked the idea behind this book, those poor fairies! I enjoyed watching the relationships build and the world they inhabited. I didn't see the twists which was good. And I really liked how feisty Layla is, but she doesn't let it rule her. Overall an enjoyable listen

Magic meets human world

An outsider in the fairy world, but this doesn't stop her from rescuing her sister and the captured fairies.

She followed the horse man too the human world and is confronted with many difficulties.

Though I'm not a fan of British accents the narration was great.
