About this listen
Madame Bovary is a lurid tale of unremorseful adultery and violent emotions set against the background of the stupefying, boring provincial town of Yonville in Normandy. The book is a biting criticism of entitlement and living beyond one's means.
Emma Bovary is beautiful and cultured but she yearns for excitement. Reading too many romantic novels has given her a taste for a lifestyle she can't afford, and she racks up eye-watering debts by secretly buying expensive trinkets from the unscrupulous merchant Lheureux. Unfulfilled by her dull-as-dishwater husband Charles and the drudgery of motherhood, she embarks on a series of torrid affairs with more exciting lovers.
How long can she hide her cheating and debts from her husband before her behavior catches up with her? Will she ever find something or someone that satisfies her craving for more?

Story
"Call me Ishmael." Thus starts the greatest American novel. Melville said himself that he wanted to write "a mighty book about a mighty theme" and so he did. It is a story of one man's obsessive revenge-journey against the white whale, Moby-Dick, who injured him in an earlier meeting. Woven into the story of the last journey of The Pequod is a mesh of philosophy, rumination, religion, history, and a mass of information about whaling through the ages.

Anna Karenina seems to have everything - beauty, wealth, popularity and an adored son. But she feels that her life is empty until the moment she encounters the impetuous officer Count Vronsky. Their subsequent affair scandalizes society and family alike and soon brings jealously and bitterness in its wake. Contrasting with this tale of love and self-destruction is the vividly observed story of Levin, a man striving to find contentment and a meaning to his life - and also a self-portrait of Tolstoy himself.

Story
Prince Lyov Nikolayevitch Myshkin is one of the great characters in Russian literature. Is he a saint or just naïve? Is he an idealist or, as many in General Epanchin's society feel, an "idiot"? Certainly his return to St. Petersburg after years in a Swiss clinic has a dramatic effect on the beautiful Aglaia, youngest of the Epanchin daughters, and on the charismatic but willful Nastasya Filippovna. As he paints a vivid picture of Russian society, Dostoyevsky shows how principles conflict with emotions - with tragic results.

One of the most revered works in English literature, Great Expectations traces the coming of age of a young orphan, Pip, from a boy of shallow aspirations into a man of maturity. From the chilling opening confrontation with an escaped convict to the grand but eerily disheveled estate of bitter old Miss Havisham, all is not what it seems in Dickens’ dark tale of false illusions and thwarted desire.

Nor for those whose destructive desires will determine her fate, and force Tess to make only the most desperate of choices. Anton Pavlovich Chekhov, (1860-1904), was born in Russia at Taganrog on the Sea of Azov. His name has become synonymous with a certain literary style much admired and widely copied since his death. Typically, a Chekhov story is a "mood", a state of mind, usually with regard to relations between one person and another. Under the influence of the constant, infinitesimal, and unforeseen pinpricks of life, there occurs a gradual transformation of that state of mind.

Set in the 1860s, The Leopard tells the spellbinding story of a decadent, dying Sicilian aristocracy threatened by the approaching forces of democracy and revolution. The Diary of a Madman and Other Stories is a bizarre and colorful collection containing the finest short stories by the iconic Russian writer Nikolai Gogol. From the witty and Kafkaesque "The Nose", where a civil servant wakes up one day to find his nose missing, to the moving and evocative "The Overcoat", about a reclusive man whose only ambition is to replace his old, threadbare coat, Gogol gives us a unique take on the absurd.

Story
The Gift is the last of the novels Nabokov wrote in his native language and the crowning achievement of that period in his literary career. It is also his ode to Russian literature, evoking the works of Pushkin, Gogol, and others in the course of its narrative: the story of Fyodor Godunov-Cherdyntsev, an impoverished émigré poet living in Berlin, who dreams of the book he will someday write - a book very much like The Gift itself.
One of the twentieth century’s master prose stylists, Vladimir Nabokov was born in St. Petersburg in 1899.

Spectacular Narration of a Great Classic
Madame Bovary is both engaging and insightful while acting as a reminder that the grass isn’t always greener on the other side. The story of Emma, a self-centered romantic who longs for the glamorous life, is one that many women can relate to in today’s day and age. Once married, she still longs for adventure, glamour, and romance that have since died down, which ultimately leads her to a path of disaster.
The narrator was truly a pleasure to listen to. Kate Petrie was a wonderful choice for this books narration. She has a captivating voice that’s a delight to listen to, drawing you into Madam Bovary’s story right from the start, making it even more entertaining and thought provoking.
Madame Bovary is a good reminder to be content with what we have in life because things can always get worse. An excellent classic by Gustave Flaubert.
