About this listen

The plan was for beautiful Claire to marry the terrifyingly sinister Simon of Navarre, wizard in residence to Richard the Fair. Instead, her plain sister, Alys, takes her place, proving herself more than a match for the man with the secrets. Meanwhile, sweet Claire falls in love with a handsome knight, and the truly evil Richard the Fair tries to make life miserable for all.

Set in medieval times, this is a rich, gorgeous tale of love, deception, and ultimate redemption.

Loved it. The Narrator made it come to life. She was excellent. I would definitely listen to her again. I didn't want to put the book down.

Loved it.

The story is unexpected and very entertaining and Ms. Erikson’s narration is amazing! I love Richard’s voice especially. I would love more stories about the adventures of Alice and Simon too!

Love the story and narrator!

I have a difficult time putting the book down. the reader did a fantastic job wasn't whining like some of the other books that I've listened to. the storyline had well-developed characters it was complex in the fact that it had side by side storylines going for the two sisters and both storylines did end up finishing. I do recommend this book.

Awesome

The narrator made this book an enjoyable one to listen to. Her different voices really matched with the personalities of the different characters and made it easy to tell who was speaking when.

The book itself was pretty good. If I'm not mistaken, this is my first time reading/listening to Anne Stuart. I usually prefer Victorian era romance, but it was cool to switch it up with a medieval setting.
Simon of Navar is really just what I want in an anti-hero, and despite her convent upbringing, Alys was smart and not at all what people assumed of her. She and Simon were well matched and I really liked their story (along her sister's sub-plot).

A good listen

What a great read! I’m so leery of anything from the romance genre these days as it all seems underwhelming, but this was a welcome surprise. Kept my attention and not too time consuming! Will be looking for more from this author! 👏🏻

Written in 1997 Before The Genre Turned to 💩

It could've been so much better if Simon didn't remind us in every chapter that he's been with countless women. This was supposed to be a romance, and being constantly remided that he was a womanizer and she an inexperienced virgin is not. But this was written in 1997 (I think), so I'll cut it some slack. I was more invested in Thomas and Claire than the main couple and they are the main reason why I even finished this book.

Almost great

Story is good. There’s great character building and I rooted for the two girls throughout. It was worth the listen

Really enjoyable

I enjoyed the story behind this book but I did not enjoy the some of the parts involving sex. I thought the author strayed over the line from romance to pure sex and it wasn’t necessary and made me uncomfortable.

Good story but I thought it went a bit too far!

I negotiated 2 chapters on a recent trip with my husband. We listened to 5. At one point I wanted to throttle the sister, but the end was perfect.

Seriously had me hanging on

It started out interesting, following two pairs (Simon/Alys and Thomas/Claire) in a sort of Robin Hood meets Beauty and the Beast setting. I liked the idea of “Wizard” Simon using his knowledge of fireworks and medicine from the East to intimidate and grab power amid the court of the dastardly Richard.
I liked that Alys was portrayed as outsmarting men to protect her sister.
I also liked that there were two romances (even if Claire was too much the pampered doll for me).

Unfortunately, so much of the story got bogged down in everyone’s inner thoughts. Instead of just letting scenes play out, we have to sit through the MCs and villain Richard’s thoughts about what they’re planning or feeling.

Richard was also hyperbolically evil, which was fun in an Alan Rickman playing Sheriff Nottingham kind of way, but relied heavily on leering, jeering, and lasciviously trash talking against a woman’s worth.

Even with two romances and some humor, there wasn’t enough to balance out all the inner monologues and abused women parts. The eventual sex scenes (starting at 8 hrs in) were also on the tame side considering the wait. This ended up good where judicious editing might have kept this at great.
