About this listen

Here, from a brilliant talent, Patricia Geary, is a haunting humorous, crisply suspenseful, and boldly original work - a charming, strange, seductive, and high-hearted breath of extremely fresh air....

Young Deirdre Gage. She has typical California pastimes. She jogs, eats health food, takes ballet lessons - and communicates with spirits. Namely, her brother, a tragic suicide, and, surprisingly, a long-dead Japanese novelist. Suddenly Deirdre is launched on a wild, perilous journey toward self-discovery and beyond. Her journey ends in a lonely hotel room. Within waits danger, delight, and the sweet temptation of oblivion.

Living in Ether

This book is so bogged down with minute ocd details that it detracts from the plot.It goes back and forth in time in a fortune tellers life.It was good,to a point.Heather Costa was the right narrator for this book. There were some repeated lines and mispronounced words. It's 'doilies' not dollies that people put on furniture.I was given this book by the narrator, author or publisher free for an honest review.

Good but kind of confusing at times

I was given this free review copy audio book at my request and have voluntarily left this review.

So, I find myself a little on the fence as I write this review. The narration is well done and was very engaging to listen to. The author is really gifted at creating vivid visuals. The part that has me on the fence is that I was kind of lost, at times, with what was going on. Like I said, I was thoroughly engaged the whole time, but I found myself going, "wait, what just happened?" I went back and relistened to at least 4 chapters to orient myself to what was going on because I wasn't sure what I missed the first time that got me lost with what was going on. So it took me a good 7-7.5 hours to listen to a book 6 hours and 48 minutes long. Because of that, I decided to rate it lower on story.

Great Writing But Hard to Follow

I thought the writing was really great. The author provided many details that helped me visualize what was being described. However, this book was a little hard to follow. It held my attention but at the same time I felt lost and somewhat confused about what was going on and its relevance. I think a second listen might clear some of the confusion up, for me.

There were a few times where the narrator repeated lines that should have been edited out. Other than that, the narrator did a really good job on this performance and was pleasant to listen to.

Lost in a maze.

Reviewing this is almost impossible for me.
Its a first for me this genre,
I felt like I’m in a maze kept getting lost.
There is no question about it that Patricia Geary is a talented writer, when she describes something she does it perfect all the way to a grain of sand, almost feels like you are seeing not reading, so I got to listen to this again to try to fully understand it all, as I said I kept getting lost in this maze.

As usual narration by Heather Costa is flawless!

So confusing and no real storyline.

Good thing I was working on a mindless project so the constant droning with no real meaning behind it was not a distraction. There was really no character growth or plot to this whole thing. The author would jump back to the main character's past and spend an inordinate amount of time there, only to jump back to present day. Really didn't see the use of spending so much time to set up a single idea or scene, as they didn't do much to advance the limited plot this thing had. I would not recommend this to anyone.
