Story
Ryland Grace is the sole survivor on a desperate, last-chance mission - and if he fails, humanity and the Earth itself will perish. Except that right now, he doesn't know that. He can't even remember his own name, let alone the nature of his assignment or how to complete it. All he knows is that he's been asleep for a very, very long time. And he's just been awakened to find himself millions of miles from home, with nothing but two corpses for company.

It’s 1984, and life has changed beyond recognition. Airstrip One, formerly known as Great Britain, is a place where Big Brother is always watching, and nobody can hide. And in a world where love and sex are forbidden, where it’s hard to distinguish between friend and foe, he meets Julia and O’Brien and vows to rebel.

Six days ago, astronaut Mark Watney became one of the first people to walk on Mars. Now, he's sure he'll be the first person to die there. After a dust storm nearly kills him and forces his crew to evacuate while thinking him dead, Mark finds himself stranded and completely alone with no way to even signal Earth that he’s alive - and even if he could get word out, his supplies would be gone long before a rescue could arrive. Story
Jazz Bashara is a criminal. Well, sort of. Life on Artemis, the first and only city on the moon, is tough if you're not a rich tourist or an eccentric billionaire. So smuggling in the occasional harmless bit of contraband barely counts, right? Not when you've got debts to pay and your job as a porter barely covers the rent. Everything changes when Jazz sees the chance to commit the perfect crime, with a reward too lucrative to turn down.

Ashley Perrin is fresh out of college and starting a job as a community liaison for the Third District–the city’s only sector with more alien residents than humans. Ashley’s barely found where the paper clips are kept when she’s beset with constituent complaints–from too much noise at the Annual Lupidian Celebration Parade to a trip-and-fall chicken to a very particular type of alien hornet that threatens the very city itself. And if that’s not terrifying enough, Ashley is next up at the office karaoke night.

Story
Tomorrow, the funk descends on Manhattan, a noxious cloud that separates the island from the rest of the world and mutates the population. Some generations on, the surviving population exists amid the rubble of modernity, wearing our cast-off clothing, worshipping celebrities as dim gods, and using emojis in place of written language. The Island exists in a state of uneasy peace, with each neighborhood an independent fiefdom, protecting itself with scrap metal spears and Molotov cocktails.

When a salvage job on an old battlefield goes awry, Kril's left with no crew, no food, a suspiciously absent client, and far too many enemies. Fortunately, it's a big universe, and he's got a fast ship and the best pilot in twenty light-years to watch his back. His journey to keep 'er flying and get a crew back together will take him from rescue operations in collapsing freighters to fighting dinosaurs in the sewage canals of pirate paradises and to points beyond. The odds are stacked against him, but Kril keeps it simple.

Neither cosmic philosopher Lars Soren, hotshot pilot Bianca Petrescu, nor the high priestess Jessica McHugh—Lady Death herself—can say quite where in the galaxy they are. But after an experiment gone horribly wrong, one thing is clear: Asphodel Station isn’t in orbit around Jupiter any longer. Worse, the monsters that live out here—ancient eldritch beings thought only to exist in stories and nightmares—have now been alerted to Earth’s existence.

Sergeant Harry Kabutt has seen better days. He's been shot down, blown up, and tossed to the wayside by the corporations, left to rot in a ratty apartment in gang territory. His own limbs? Shredded, cut away, and left to rot on a mountainside. The replacement mods? Likely to fall apart or leave him to die of sepsis. No longer an operator of the feared APS mecha, Kabutt has hit rock bottom. But he's on foot, he's armed, and he's in serious pain…now it's time to take that pain and spread it around the mega-city of Artem. See who flinches first.

Twenty-one years have passed since the end of the wars against the Insectoids and the rogue AI Machineships. A new generation of Shilohs has joined the Space Force, much to the joy of the AIs that still revere the memory of The Cag, Victor Shiloh. And, once again, humanity is in mortal danger. The temporal backlash from multiple time jumps that the Friendlies had warned against is making itself felt with a vengeance. Can humans and their loyal AI allies find a way to undo their meddling with time? Changing the past without resorting to time travel will be but half the battle.

Chase had it all planned out. Do a little time in one of the emperor's jails, say a four-year stretch, for getting rid of some trash that no one would miss, and when he got out, the path to leadership would be wide open. Unfortunately, his bastard of a father, the same one who left his mother to die in poverty and him to run wild on the streets, took an interest. Seeing him sitting on the bench when his case went to court was a shock. But not as big a shock as being sentenced to ten years in the Imperial Navy.

Good ideas, but...
Note: my review encompasses this and the next book (really they are both pairs of books) in this series.
I thought the idea(s) behind this book were really, really interesting. But for me, the story never paid off. The dialog is recursive and tangential; with lots of exposition. And certain details of the story don't really make sense; for example, how could a society that built a generation starship devolve into such a primitive medieval state after only 300 years, despite the presence of functioning futuristic technology in its midst?
This first book pair was more solid than the second; the second book pair created a lot more questions than answers, and introduced one other twist in the epilog that was just plain weird. The whole thing just never quite came together for me, and I don't plan on reading more in this series.

It is a great story
It took a couple of hours to get into it.
Ride out that first couple of hours and you’ll be happy.

Discovering the (supposed) truth of the setting
Gene wolfe is the master of worldbuilding for all time. Following Silk through his ignorant yet wise escapades makes me love him more than any protagonist

Finally a worthy audio version of this classic
Culp's performance of the many characters is distinct and consistent, and helps keep the reader's focus tight in the middle of what eventually becomes a fairly convoluted plot.
Let's be honest though, the performance succeeds or fails on one question, and the answer to that question is: yes, he nails the voice of Oreb the talking bird. Fish heads?

Worth the wait!
A long-awaited Audible version of Wolfe's classic that does the story justice. Worth listening to and listening again.

EXCELLENT!!!
So happy to listen to this in audio format many years after reading the series.
The narrator was awesome and the story was even more engaging than I had remembered.
Thank you audible for making this available.

A great story, and a fantastic bird
Oreb is one of my new favorite literary creations. Jason Culp brings Oreb and the myriad other characters to vivid life. Another great tale from Mr. Wolfe

Utterly brilliant in it’s tedium
Less baroque, wordy and seemingly postmodern than New Sun but no less rife with allegory. When Wolfe is ON, my is he ON. The bizarre mashing of Levantine and Mesoamerican traditions works even better in long sun than it did in new sun, and the pacing is quite unique. Cannot wait to finish the last two books in this series nor can I wait for the release of short sun. The solar cycle may be one of the best series I have ever encountered.

SPOILERS IN TITLE DESCRIPTION
The publishers description spoils major information that 5 chapters in hasn’t been revealed. One of the joys of reading Gene is figuring out his worlds from context clues alone. A joy spoiled by fools.
