About this listen

Charleston attorney Hanna Walsh finds her life in emotional and financial ruin when her husband's ties to a ruthless stranger unleashes a spiraling cascade of betrayal and murder in this twisting story of treachery and shattered dreams.

Escaping to her last refuge on Pawleys Island, she discovers a letter and journal in the attic of her family's old beach house. She learns of a distant great-grandmother who owned the same house as a young widow during the Civil War who suffered a similar path of devastating loss and betrayal.

Charleston police detective Alex Frank comes into Hanna's life and joins an FBI team to help her through the chaos and danger coming at her from all directions.

The story kept me interested through out. Loves the back and forth stories between 1860's and present time. Usually good at guessing endings but this one kept me guessing.

Loved reading this

Absolutely loved this book. Loved how the twists in both story lines have such similarities and I really liked how you moved back and forth in the timelines, and telling us at the beginning of each timeline what year it is. That's important to do, especially for someone like me, so I don't get confused. I love this book and highly recommend it.

The end was a complete surprise!

The story was good. it needs more context to be more of a mystery. And there was to much going from the present to the past. The person doing the reading has the worse southern accent. I live in South Carolina, I would know.

I like the concept of the story.

I loved the location (Charleston and Pawleys Island) as I lived there for 5 years. I liked the characters and the story moving back and forth between Civil War era and current time.

Hoping book #2 is just as good

I loved the intertwining stories of this book. I listened to this book in my car as I went to work or just drove around. I found myself lingering in the driveway yo get in as much as I could everyday.

I’m headed over to buy book two.

Three stories in one

Thank goodness I took a chance and purchased this book! I really like the story and once I turned the book on it played right up until the end.
Although a couple hundred years apart Hanna and her Great Great (?) Grandmother Amanda shared a very similar life with the death/murder of their husbands being a pivotal moment in each of their lives. The timeline goes back and forth between the two women. As each new event occurs in the present day, a comparison is drawn to her GGGrandmother’s. They both suffer through unwanted sexual advances by people they considered close. They also are dealt financial blows and threats because of their husbands.
Narration by Emily Sutton Smith is the best of the best!
I HIGHLY RECOMMEND this book.
