About this listen

A dark urban fantasy with a sense of humor

When Axe Cooper is murdered while picking up Chinese takeout, he's pretty irritated about the loss of a good dinner, not to mention being dead. Not prepared to move on just yet, Axe decides to stick around and haunt his best friend Lily Chan while trying to figure out why anyone would kill a janitor. In the meantime, Axe is hired by The Ghost Post to track down recently deceased writers. As he learns more about his new phantom friends, Axe realizes that his murder is not an isolated event and that if he doesn't learn to fly like Superman, Lily could be next.

How did I miss this?!

I was unaware of this book until very recently, and it surprised me in many ways (all of them good). I have read her paranormal steampunk set in early Nairobi and loved them, so I was surprised to see that this is set in current times in Vancouver. I really enjoyed the imaginative turn taken with the afterlife/ghost theme as it is so different from the ordinary yet is written so clearly that my imagination visualized everything easily. The characters certainly are and become real very quickly. I plan to read more in this series because it is so interesting!
I have the audio, and I am certain that the soft spoken delivery of Steven Jay Cohen really did add many positives to my enjoyment.

Unique Story

I really enjoyed this audiobook. It has a unique premise and diverse and frequently humorous characters. There is action, adventure, and mystery. There is some suspense and drama, but it is presented with a sense of humor. There isn't a lot fear and angst. More of a comedic suspense mystery. It's entertaining and a lot of fun.

The narration was very good. It was easy to distinguish the different characters. I loved Shadow. The voice he was given sounded like Morgan Freeman to me, and that's who I thought of every time he appeared in the audiobook, especially with his wise-cracking demeanor.

My only disappointment is that the story seemed incomplete at the end. I assume since this is labeled as Book 1, that there is still more of the story to come. The rest of the series is not out yet, so I will have to wait to learn how the story ends.

I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.

Fabulous Narration!

So the book was good, but the narration is unbelievably fabulous. Timmy's voice was stellar and Fay's man voice, perfect! The story was good too, but it does leave you hanging. I need to get the next book when it is available. It was definitely a different kind of ghost story full of humor and malaise. Basically, janitor aka axe is murdered and doesn't pass on but, is stuck on this mortal plane and needs to get a darn ghost job. In the workings of it he begins to solve his murder, while making friends, and avoiding death marks. Fun story, excellent narrator. A Fun Paranormal Mystery

Lethal Takeout was an easy listen to settle into. The story was clean and entertaining not frightening. I really enjoyed the character of Axe as well as Lee and especially Shadow. I think that the listener/reader can immediately identify with the main character. This was neat, fun, and no gore which I loved.

This is Ghost Post Mysteries Book One written by Vered Ehsani therefore I look forward to more in the series. I can't wait to see what direction it takes next. Segue to the awesome narration...

Steven Jay Cohen's performance was outstanding. I think this is the first time I've listened to him and he has an amazing voice. His characterizations were perfect. He has a neat voice; very easy to listen to and calming.

Fun and quick listen

Axe Cooper is murdered just after picking up Chinese takeout for him and his friend Lee. He receives the visit of two angels to take him with them but it seems he can’t still go. Axe needs to solve his murder, and in the way, he will also need to solve other murders.

This was a fun and quick listen. The main character in this story is Axe Cooper, a Janitor, also ex-engineer, who is murdered, and the first thing he thinks is that Lee is going to be annoyed by not having dinner. He has a peculiar view of life, and this is translated into the text in various funny and quirky situations. His friend Lee is a no-nonsense person, also janitor, with the ability to see ghosts.

I found the book fast paced and very dynamic. There are multiple side characters making the story rich and entertaining, and although the we don’t know much about how things work, it’s just fine, since Axe doesn’t either, and we discover everything along with him.

I have a small complaint about the book, and it’s the ending. I felt it rushed and not very clear. I expected them to get some proofs about the murderers, and maybe a bit more explicit. It seems there was a great buildup that finally didn’t amount to much.

Steven Jay Cohen’s narration was exquisite. I especially enjoyed how he was able to transmit the characters’ emotions and become Axe in this story. It is also amazing the fact that all characters, and they aren’t a few, were perfectly recognizable with their unique voice and style. The audio production was spotless.

I thoroughly enjoyed this audiobook, and I am looking forward to future installments, where we can know more about Axe and Lee.

I received a copy of this book in audio format from the narrator in exchange for an honest review.

The story seemed lacking

The narrator did an amazing job with the material he had to work with. About mid way the story stopped making much sense. It started off great and had my complete attention. As the story started failing it was hard to stay interested. No real explanations as to what a death mark is or how the shadow cowboy was a death mark. Incomplete story line at one point. I like the narrators work and would like to hear some of his other works but I don’t think I’d be interested in following this series.
