About this listen

A stunning repackage of a companion to Mildred D. Taylor's Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry, with cover art by two-time Caldecott Honor Award winner Kadir Nelson!

It is a frightening and turbulent time for the Logan family. First, their friend T. J. must go on trial for murder - and confront an all-white jury. Then, Cousin Suzella tries to pass for white, with humiliating consequences. And when Cassie's neighbor Mrs. Lee Annie stands up for her right to vote, she and her family are driven from their home. Other neighbors are destroyed and shattered by the greed of landowners. But through it all, Cassie and the Logans stand together and stand proud - proving that courage, love, and understanding can defy even the deepest prejudice.

Critic reviews

"Miss Taylor conveys the textures of life among black as well as white and writes not with rancor or bitterness over indignities but with pride, strength, and respect for humanity." (The New York Times)

"A profoundly affecting novel." (Publishers Weekly)

"The fear, cruelty, and the bewildering injustice of a hopelessly racist society are transcended by a family's strength, self-respect, and determination. The characters, both young and old, in all their variety and individuality come alive with penetrating humanness, while the effect of the storytelling is intensified by a lean, understated style and made more poignant by touches of lyrical sensitivity." (The Horn Book)

Good read!

Another good book by Mildred Taylor. The beginning started slow, but that didn’t last too long. The only thing that annoyed me about the story was that I thought the children were made to seem too nosey, LOL :) I grew up in an era were children didn’t butt in to grown folks business, point blank. Other than that, it was a great book to read.

Great book!

This was a wonderful book! I did listen to this book with my children. It does deal with some difficult subjects such as racism, bullying, slavery and segregation. There is a bit of colorful language. I allowed my children to listen to it but explained to the about the language how we do not use those words. This was a very insightful book. We really learned a lot about how difficult life was for black people during those times. This book has a lot of life learning situations from the main characters. I believe this book helps to instill good character and doing the right thing even when life is hard. Great book!

GREAT!!!!

This is a absolutely wonderful story. Mildred D Taylor is the great author of The Logan family saga. I been reading these stories since I was a child and every time I read them again I'm as excited as the first time. It is definitely a must read. Great Story❤❤❤.

Narration is terrible

I love this saga and couldn’t wait to listen to the next book in the series, but I must say I am highly disappointed. The narrator is hard to listen to and doesn’t sound authentic.

Great book.

I am a big fan of roll of thunder hear my cry. We read it in middle school and ever since then I enjoyed Mildred Taylor's books. Allyson Johnson did an excellent job with narrating the book. I mean the difference voices of character, boy that was impressive. it's not easy as it appears but she did an excellent job. At times, it felt like watching a movie, the suspense was too much at times. overall, great book and narration.

Great story!

I've always loved this series! I remember reading this book when I was in middle school and it still resonates. I didn't care for the narrator but she did her best. She just doesn't sound like someone from the south let alone Mississippi. Still the story was worth listening to.
