About this listen

Many are the sagas of Leman Russ, Lord of Winter and War, most fearsome of the Emperor's primarch sons. At the height of the Great Crusade, his Space Wolves fight to bring the rebel world of Dulan to compliance.

Enraged by the defiance of the tyrant Durath, Russ has pledged to strike him down personally - but his brother Lion El'Jonson of the Dark Angels advises more caution. With the might of two Legions arrayed against Durath, tensions nevertheless run high, and the rivalry between the Wolf and the Lion threatens to engulf them all.

What makes a Barbarian king

This Novella is a framework story built around the making of a BLOOD Claw. The first blood claws of the Chapter rather than the Legion. An already interesting time frame to set a story in the Warhammer 40k lore. The story within that is told about the Space Wolves during the great crusade.

The Story set within the great crusade really establishes the culture of the legion during the time of Leman Russ. Still amongst the great companies are members from Leman Russ's war host during his time as a mortal man, before the coming of the Imperium to Fenris. The relationship between Russ and those members are different than the relationship of him and the space wolves turned as children. it's great to hear all those interactions.

I loved the Narration! Had I read this novel, I would have struggled with the name's, but just the pronunciation of the Norse words was great. Also, the voices for the various characters in the story are instantly recognizable and distinct.

This is my second audible book and I'm starting to fancy them.

Fun brotherly rivalry

I don't know what this book would have been if Lion El wasn't in it, but this book is now a great brotherly rivalry story. Ending was great.

Great Primarch Book

Listened to about half the primarch books and this is the best one so far. Not really a fan of space wolves or Russ but couldn’t help but enjoy it. Lots of The Lion in this too. Chris Wraight is underrated.

I’d you’re planning on reading the other primary books I’d say the next best is Curze and then Alpharius.

Good, solid Primarch book

Better than most Primarch books but not the best. The story details more about the animosity between the Wolves and the Dark Angels, a siege against a defiant world during the Great Crusade as it's backdrop.

Gives more character to the insights of Russ during such times, further amplifying that he is more than a peerless warrior, but a deep thinker and mindful leader. Also an empathetic, humble one at that too. All true Wolf fans owe it to themselves to read this one, better to understand that the Wolves are more than just boastful barbarians clad in ceramite, but capable of regretful choices too.

Essential reading for Wolves & Angels fans

This is a well written & well performed audible book. The story gives insights into the Space Wolves & the Dark Angels, as well as their respective primarchs. Worth the read.

Good

I'm always intrigued at learning more of the primarchs thoughts but despair at how obvious the mistakes they make are. However, it is a really great book to learn about the intrigue and relations between the primarchs and getting insight into the Wolf and the Lions perception of themselves and each other.

Excellent

There is more insight into The Lion in this book than there is in the actual Primarchs book featuring him. The author chose to tell the origin of the honor duals that happen between the Wolves and the Angels in this book and I really enjoyed it.
