About this listen

Iconoclast. Contrarian. Pugilist. Artist. Throughout his life, shrewd self-promoter and creative genius Edgar Leeteg possessed many titles, astounding fans and antagonizing critics. Considered the “American Gauguin”, the rakish ladies’ man originated the modern technique of oil painting on black velvet. Once memorialized by James Michener as the original rascal in paradise, he redefined artistic success by pioneering a form of painting in the South Pacific that would forever change the world.

The rascal in paradise.. this is a great listen!!!

CJ Cook did it again. I’ve always wondered about this “rascal in paradise”. This book is very well researched and cleverly weaves the together the story of Edgar Leeteg’s life in Tahiti, from early origins and artistical influences, to the legacy he ultimately left behind. After reading this book, be assured that you will find yourself performing an online search for one of Leeteg’s “velvets” currently for sale and daydream of owning one. They are beautiful pieces of art with an even more colorful back story. Thank you to CJ Cook for brining Leeteg to life.

A Wonderful Adventure with a real rascal through the South Pacific Paradise

This is the most interesting and detailed account of one of a true artistic genius, how was also a colorful rascal by anyone’s reasoning. The story follows Leeteg from his early life and career as a sign painter through his development to one of the most successful artists from the first half of the 20th Century. His travels throughout the South Pacific create a stunning background for his many adventures. His complicated relationship with his Mother and his other relationships with the many women in his life is a fascinating story.
His development of painting on black velvet took this art form to a new level that was later imitated but never surpassed. His enjoyment of life with the drinking, brawling and womanizing is legendary.
Anyone will enjoy his life story and be thrilled by the beauty of his models he was able to capture on his black velvet canvases.
