The 19th century in Europe was a time of unprecedented artistic achievement. At the center of the book is a poignant love triangle: the Russian writer Ivan Turgenev; the Spanish prima donna Pauline Viardot, with whom Turgenev had a long and intimate relationship; and her husband Louis Viardot, an art critic, theater manager, and republican activist. Together, Turgenev and the Viardots acted as a kind of European cultural exchange - they either knew or crossed paths with Delacroix, Berlioz, Chopin, Brahms, Liszt, the Schumanns, Hugo, Flaubert, Dickens, and Dostoyevsky, among many other towering figures.

As Figes observes, nearly all of civilization’s great advances have come during periods of heightened cosmopolitanism - when people, ideas, and artistic creations circulate freely between nations. Vocabulary, selection of point of view, lack of pure politics so common in such a theme.

Fascinating text, uneven narration

A wonderfully informative cultural history. However, the narrator’s ability to pronounce words accurately in languages other than English was very uneven, and at times bothersome. Narration in English can be somewhat monotonous.

DO LISTEN TO THIS BOOK!!!

This is a most amazing book for lovers of classical music, literature and paintings.
For those not familiar with classical art and music, it will open the door wide open to explore.
The author mentions composers, authors and painters. Classic literature.
Happenings in Europe when railroads were completed, which brought the countries together.
In searching the Internet, it was mentioned, that mr. Figes considered this book to be his “masterpiece “, I hope that this does not mean that he will stop writing.
Immense research and knowledge is connected to his
“Masterpiece”.
I am a fan of mr. Figes and cannot recommend him highly enough.
The narrator is fabulous.
