About this listen
Here, in Last Light Over Carolina, Monroe tells the haunting and touching story of a longtime shrimp boat captain and his wife of 30 years on the day he is injured at sea.
On an otherwise ordinary day, in a small shrimping village off the coast of South Carolina, a boat goes missing. The entire town rallies as all are mobilized to find the lost vessel. Throughout the course of one day, flashbacks of Bud Morrison, the captain on board, and Carolina, his wife, reveal the happier days of a once-thriving shrimping industry juxtaposed with the memories of their long term marriage.
Through her wonderfully evocative storytelling and keen insights into the human heart, Mary Alice Monroe has yet again delivered an exceptional and engaging work of fiction.

Sweetgrass is a historic tract of land in South Carolina that has been home to the Blakely family for eight generations. Story
Her husband’s suicide left Nora MacKenzie alone, and his shady Wall Street dealings left the Manhattan socialite penniless. By a miracle, she’s held on to their mountainside farm - and she’ll keep holding on, no matter what. The property is Nora’s one chance to wring some dignity out of the sham she’s been living. The Vermont locals think she’s a city girl on a nature kick, but she’s not afraid to get her hands dirty. Nora’s serious about learning the farming business...if she can figure out where to begin.

This is one of the better books by Monroe. The plot is well developed as are the characters. The plot weaves back and forth in time and is very engaging.

So close to heart and home
This is one of the best stories I have ever heard. I grew up on the NC coast amongst fishermen and hurricanes. I could easily place my family or a neighbor in this wonderful story . Read from the heart. I have smiled and cried listening to a story of love, loss and what it means to be the wife of a fisherman/shrimper. Thank you

A ho-hum love story
I live along the gulf coast so the shrimping theme was of interest to me. However, once all the actors had been identified, I could pretty much tell how this tale was going to go. There were no surprises, no protagonist, and not much of interest. But if you’re looking for a love story, you may like this one
