El sultán Shahriar descubre que su esposa lo engaña y la decapita. Todavía lleno de rencor, cada día desposa a una mujer a la que luego ordena matar por la mañana. Inesperadamente, Sherezade, la hija del visir, se ofrece voluntaria para casarse con el sultán. Durante la noche de bodas, la muchacha inicia un relato que deja fascinado a su marido, pero que interrumpe justo antes del amanecer.
Los cuentos narrados por la inteligente Sherezade son historias folclóricas de Oriente Medio que supuestamente se recopilaron en el siglo IX, mientras que la historia de la joven y el sultán, que sirve de marco para el resto de historias, no debió de incluirse hasta cinco siglos más tarde. Al principio las historias me parecieron interesantes, conforme pasaban los capítulos, encontraba muy similar una historia con otra, hasta el punto que me cansó mucho escucharlo. la narración es buena pero al ya no atraparme la historia, en ocasiones la narración también me parecía floja. No me dieron ánimos para seguir con los siguientes tomos.
