Au rez-de-chaussée, une dizaine de pianos d’occasion, rangés en désordre comme dans un dépôt. Aux étages, une sorte de cantine avec un bar et les studios de danse. Elle prenait des cours avec Boris Kniaseff, un Russe que l’on considérait comme l’un des meilleurs professeurs... Une odeur particulière de vieux bois, de lavande et de sueur."

Décevant
C’est un roman inachevé. Tous les thèmes de Modiano sont la - passé incertain, mémoire faillible, plus une récente insistance sur l’âge et le vieillissement. Mais si ces personnages sont tous familiers - la danseuse mystérieuse, le jeune homme écrivain perdu, le petit garçon abandonné, le milieu de la pègre, l’auteur semble détaché, presque inintéressé. Et le mysticisme de la fin ressemble à une excuse pour pouvoir ne rien révéler finalement. Des bribes de souvenirs, c’est intéressant pour la
personne qui se souvient, mais ça ne forme pas un roman sans intervention de l’auteur. Ça détone un peu dans l’œuvre de Modiano.
