La Guerra de Troya ha terminado y por fin el héroe y rey griego Ulises puede volver a casa, la isla de Ítaca, donde su amada Penélope y su hijo Telémaco lo esperan ansiosos. Deberá regresar antes de que los pretendientes de Penélope acaben invadiendo el palacio y consumiendo todos los bienes de la familia.
Sin embargo, no será un viaje fácil. Ulises cuenta con el apoyo de la diosa Atenea, pero ni siquiera ella podrá proteger a Ulises y sus hombres de la ira de Poseidón, de los encantos de Circe, de la amenaza de las sirenas, de Escila y Cariddis y de muchos otros seres mitológicos y terrenales que harán lo posible por alejarlo de Ítaca.
El poema épico de la Odisea es la historia de la que parten todas las demás historias: un relato sobre el heroísmo, sobre la fatalidad de la guerra, sobre la identidad, el amor, la añoranza y el eterno tema del regreso al hogar.
Homero (ca. siglo VIII a. C.) es el nombre que se le da al aedo, o cantante de epopeyas, a quien tradicionalmente se le ha atribuido la autoría de los principales poemas épicos griegos: la Ilíada y la Odisea. Varias teorías sugieren que Homero se trataba en realidad de un grupo de artistas y poetas, encargados de recordar y transmitir la poesía épica local.
