About this listen

Kitty Norville is a midnight-shift DJ for a Denver radio station---and a werewolf in the closet. Sick of lame song requests, she accidentally starts "The Midnight Hour," a late-night advice show for the supernaturally disadvantaged. After desperate vampires, werewolves, and witches across the country begin calling in to share their woes, her new show is a raging success. But it's Kitty who can use some help. With one sexy werewolf hunter and a few homicidal undead on her tail, Kitty may have bitten off more than she can chew.©2005 Carrie Vaughn, LLC (P)2009 Tantor Action & Adventure Contemporary Fantasy Fiction Mystery Paranormal Paranormal Romance Police Procedurals Romance Romantic Suspense Supernatural Thriller & Suspense Urban Women's Adventure Women's Fiction Shifter Wolf Werewolf

Editorial reviews

Kitty Norville is just your average, everyday Disc Jockey, except for the fact that she turns into a werewolf every full moon. But that werewolf bit is a secret, at least until one night she starts taking calls about the paranormal and stumbles into hosting a popular, syndicated advice show for the supernaturally gifted (or afflicted). Things are going great with the new show at least until a hitman tries to kill her on the air. But after talking her way out of being murdered, and charming the hitman to her side in the process, Kitty has to find out who's really behind the hit...while at the same time unwillingly assisting the police in an investigation of suspicious deaths which look like the work of a werewolf. Untangling these two mysteries would be complicated for anyone, let alone a DJ out of her depth, and it's all made even more complex by werewolf clan dynmaics, the vampire clan eager to get the werewolves away from their turf, and a preacher who claims he can cure supernatural afflictions.

To pull off the first-person narration of a talk show DJ in an audiobook, it's essential to capture the feel and sound of the talk show host just right. If that was a challenge for narrator Marguerite Gavin, you'd never know it; she sounds so authentic as DJ Kitty Norville, you'd think she was a DJ herself. This is partly due to Vaughn's witty dialogue and strong authorial voice, but Gavin brings a little something extra to the role that you wouldn't necessarily get when reading it off the page. The several "Midnight Hour" talk show bits in the book sound pitch-perfect in depicting both Kitty's hosting persona and the callers' personalities and neuroses, thanks in large part to Gavin's excellent pacing and injection of attitude and sultriness into the role.

For fans of Sookie Stackhouse's adventures or contemporary urban fantasies, this one is a no-brainer. But even if you don't normally go for that kind of thing, Kitty and the Midnight Hour deserves a spot in your listening queue. It's just plain fun, and Gavin's talents shine throughout the narrative, making it one of those audiobooks that'll have you wishing your commute was a little bit longer so you'll have the excuse to keep listening. Great narrator, almost literature

Almost Chick Lit. Has sociological study value. The narrator is perfect for this reading. I think one of the better values available in audible.

New idea to an old story

I'm being generous giving this book a 3 star rating. I like the idea of a werewolf hosting a radio station and answering questions for paranormal community. it's my first reading a werewolf story with that particular spin.

I think this is a decent first of series book. It has sex, action, and drama. A good mix of all of them to keep you interested.

Here are my issues. 1. Why does Kitty have to be so pathetic? Since when are wolves wimpering and scared sh*t less all the time. 2. What's with the no MATES idea. 3. Didn't care for the idea of the Alpha sleeping with all the female wolves. I don't see half human half wolf men allowing all the women of the pack to be taken. 4. If this radio show is being taken serious enough for a Senator to join then either people would ridicule him for believing or panic. It made the story that is set in the real world seem less acceptable. I know it's fantasy but great storytelling will make you feel like you are really there and this is really happening.

Good start. I'll try the next one.

I wish I could get my money back

I've listened to many audio books. Marguerite Gavin is the most annoying narrator I've ever listened to. It is almost impossible to get into the story at all because her voice has no emotion at all. She sounds like she is trying to be a radio d.j. the whole time. Even real d.j.'s have normal talking voices when they aren't on the air. She has an almost nasally sounding, pinched off voice and sounds like she's trying to sound either amused or sarcastic all the time. It makes it hard to focus on what's going on because her voice is almost monotone from the "sameness". Her voice seems to lilt off at the end of phrases, and she pauses in inappropriate places, which is disconcerting.

I listed to part of Dead Witch Walking, which she also narrates, and her voice sounds exactly the same. She uses the "d.j." voice in that book too. Maybe that's just the way she talks.

I bought the other books based on the recommendations on audible before listening to the first one. I feel sick to have paid the money for them all.

It was ok

This series was recommended by someone in my book group so I gave it a shot. It just didnt pull me into the story. I finished the book, hoping I would like it more or become invested in the main characters. Sadly, I didn't. It has potential so I may try book 2, just to give it another chance.

Kitty Rocks!

Finally dove into the Kitty series and was so happy to find that Marguerite Gavin was the narrator. As a fan of Kim Harrison, I was pleased to find another series to enjoy. Kitty is a great character. She starts out fairly typical and then you get to watch her character blossom and become independent and strong. Highly recommend for those who love vampire, werewolf, etc series that are on an adult level.

looking forward to the rest

I listened to it all at once. but it's not the first book of hers I've listened to. Good author, good stories :) I liked the narrator also. sometimes the series are great but the narrator makes you not want to keep going. NOT the case here! good all the way around. I recommend giving it a shot. Previously, the series I read was how to run naked with a werewolf... series. series title probably wrong but you'll know what I'm talking about when you check out her other books...
