About this listen

The first great war of Ovira is over, and the most hated king in centuries is dead, but his nephew still lives. However, Basen had nothing to do with the destructive war his uncle started. In fact it was his uncle who exiled him and his father to the territory of their enemies, where Basen's dreams of becoming a legendary mage now fade, as he must work all day just to eat. His only chance at regaining some semblance of the life he thought he would lead is to join an elite school that trains, houses, and feeds a thousand new young men and women each year. But little does Basen know that his determination will put him at the center of a war even bloodier than the one he'd barely managed to avoid.

Story feels like it was written by a teenage girl, lots of emotion. Fight sequences seem like the author lacks experience. The same can be said of how the author approaches socio-political issues in the storyline.

Seems to drag

This was a real slow starter. I barely payed attention in the first few hours. It did finally hook me eventually though. The writing style needs work imo. Still I'll probably follow up with the series and see where it goes.

Not a huge fan of the narrator. He was far to monotone for me. It was listenable however.

"I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review."

I liked the story and the characters. The magic system is somewhat new (for me at least) and it should be interesting to see where it goes. This was shorter than most books I listen to but the pace wasn't rushed and the story unfolded nicely. I will, at some point, finish the series.

Brad Wilcox did a pretty good job narrating. The male voices were clearly different but at times I had trouble telling the difference between some female voices and male voices when certain males and females were talking to each other.

Overall I would say it's worth the credit.

Fun story

I love a good fantasy story and after reading the Kin of Kings description, I was really interested in listening to the book, and was happy to be gifted a copy of the audiobook at no cost in exchange for an unbiased review by the author, narrator, or publisher courtesy of Audiobook Blast dot com.

I'll admit, in the beginning the story started off slow and almost lost me. It was part the story and part the narration. However, after a couple of hours, the story and narrator really took off! I remember thinking much the story did "180" and was glad I did not give up. The plot starting developing with unexpected twists, and the narrator really seemed to have nailed down the characters and was doing an awesome job.

The plot and characters were developed and Basen was my favorite; however, there was another character who I really like because of their determination and hard work but they turned out to be bad person..... I did not see that coming. This story does end on a cliffhanger so I will be on the lookout for the next audiobook. I really want to know what happens next.

Overall, I enjoyed the story and was glad I stuck with it. I would have really missed out on a good story.

It strikes me that there doesn't seem to be a explanation for the stars that are given. So I thought I'd start giving my take on it.
1 horrible no redeeming qualities. So far I've never given a 1.
2 there are redeeming qualities.
3 good worth reading, or well written but not my cup of tea.
4 great but there's something off.

Pretty good story and good beginning to a series. Somewhat of a YA story, but still entertaining. The story kinda jumps right in and explains past characters as it needs to, which is a little strange, but the story still works. Will be listening to the second installment.

I have to admit the other reviews gave me a little bit of pause before I bought this one to listen to. I would have to say that epic fantasy is my favorite genre of literature and this one was a delightful addition to the titles that I will happily recommend to my friends.
The ending that came with a surprise that was a delightful twist and not one that I saw coming and I can't wait for the next one which I think is out in print and hopefully will be available on Audible soon!

B.T. Narro is incredible at setting up the stage and keeping you guessing. Just to flip you on your head later, the characters are all memorable and have such depth and personality. Each character, place and event feel like they are realistic and crafted very well.

Brad C. Wilcox does an amazing job of selling the characters in this book, he really brings the words on the page to life. His portrayal will have your heart racing from start to finish.

First time listening to this author. I appreciated the sense of realism when it comes to genders, the author manages to write believable situations where a woman might best a man in combat. There wasn't a strong sense of political nonsense around it either, so there's that too. Overall pretty great start to a saga I'd say. The only bad thing is that the narrator is hit or miss depending on the situation he's voicing. I found it a little jarring how he's unable to switch his tone based on what he's reading.
