A woman seeks justice for her murdered cousin—but can't resist a seductive suspect—in this romantic thriller by the New York Times bestselling author.

In the courtroom, defense lawyer Quinn Cortez has a reputation as a ruthless predator who always gets what he wants. In the bedroom, it's no different. Quinn is an accomplished seducer with a long list of conquests. But now, someone has brutally slaughtered one of them, and Quinn has no memory of the night he was found in her home . . .

Annabelle Vanderley wants justice for her murdered cousin. If Quinn Cortez swears he can find the true killer, she's willing to give him the benefit of a doubt. But then another body is discovered. Then another. And each victim is an ex-lover of Quinn's. Now, consumed by dread, Annabelle wonders just how close she may be to a twisted psychopath for whom her pain would be the ultimate pleasure . . .

I love Beverly Barton but…

I have read a lot of Bev’s books and love them. But this one has been my least favorite by FAR. It doesn’t help that the narrator’s tone throughout the book was just off, but the whole storyline this time around sounded very far fetched. Hoping the rest in the Griffin Powell series are better

from Alabama or California

All the character voices sound like surfers. Good book though. I would for sure recommend.

Good story…strange narration.

Great story but the narrator put a weird inflection on some of her phrases. I’m excited to hear more about the other characters in more of her books.

Sigh

I just found Beverly Barton and have fallen in love with her work. I'm only on chapter 5, but this narrator is driving me crazy. Her inflections, emphasizing and overall narration is driving me nuts, but I keep listening because I'm interested in the story (especially since it is about one of the continuous characters from previous stories). I can usually get past a questionable narrator, but she makes me grind my teeth.

Not my favorite narrator

I found it hard to concentrate on the story because of the narrators determination to emphasize every other word

so-so

Not my favorite narrator... sometimes the emphasis is really in the wrong place. or imho, just doesn't make sense.

I also get really tired of everyone being referred to by complete first & last names. legit the book could be an hour shorter it it wasn't always Quinn Cortez and Annabel Vanderlay.

I (mostly) enjoyed the ("free") Cherokee Point books... but not sure I'll spend more credits on this series.

Good story, narrator was absolutely awful.

The story had some nice cliffhangers that surprised me. The characters are completely unrealistic and I felt like I was reading the lines from a soap opera. This narrator was the worst I’ve heard on Audible since listening for ten years!!! She sounds like one of my daughters when the were 16, with a horrible vocal fry or valley girl accent. It annoyed the hell out of me the entire book.

Need different narrator

Saccharine and drawn out in several places. She really tried to keep us on edge about who the killer is but it became fairly obvious early on. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing if it wasn’t so obvious that BB was trying to keep it a secret with red herrings and then a “TA DA” big reveal. I found Annabelle annoying. She is appalled that Quinn had five lovers over the past two years although with the lead-up this was lower than I expected. She is portrayed to be this naive miss although she is aware her cousin had been molesting his sister since childhood. She reads Quinn’s background file and then when he hesitates to talk about his past she can’t imagine why.

Great story

I loved the suspense of the story and the characters. Unfortunately, the narration and performance were not good. This title would be amazing if recorded with more actors and varied voices. I will recommend to read the book and overlook Audible on this one.
