Great Tale

A nice little short that gives you a look at the friend of Miri who left New York on her own adventure. Jenny loves birds and falls into a world where she lets a bird loose and becomes a slave to the man who owns them. With a little help she releases all the birds and finds her place in the world that will become clearer when she matures a bit more. The narrator did a fine job with the story.

Love Hearing Jenny's Story

I offered to review this audiobook because I am such an an avid reader but also almost exclusively audio due to my schedule. Because of this, and the fact that a bad narrator can destroy a great series, I can be very critical of narrators. Especially when books have a single narrator required to speak with different voices for multiple characters. Most cannot do it without having some errors where they use the wrong 'voice' for the wrong character. Lisa Hicks does a good job in narrating all voices this novella. It was a very enjoyable listen and I didn't have any issues distinguishing between characters.

As to the story, I am not one to give a lot of specific story details since I feel you should read the story for that. However, I will say that this is a novella on one of the side characters of the P.A.W.S. series, Jenny, who was best friends with Miri before her grandmother dies. I love seeing what happens to her since it appears she has disappeared when Miri goes back to the neighborhood in the main series You won't be disappointed if you give it a try!

If you love something, set it free...

Jenny is making her Halloween costume. On previous Halloweens, she had been a fairy and was planning on being a fairy again. But plans change when birds begin bringing her feathers, lots of feathers of all different colors.

On one visit to the village marketplace, she notices one stall selling birds who are all in cages. She sets one bird free and tries to run away, but she is caught by the merchant, who forces her to work for him as an indentured servant until she has worked off the debt of the cost of the one bird. Taking care of the birds, Jenny becomes more determined than ever to set all of the other birds free, too.

This book was narrated by Lisa Hicks, who did a wonderful job. After having listened to all four of these short stories from the P.A.W.S. world, I definitely want to read more in this world. Whether you have already been introduced to this world, or are new to this world, I think you will enjoy all of these short stories.

3.5

3.5/5 Stars Jenny by Debbie Manber Kupfer
Run time: 33 minutes
Narrated by Lisa Hicks
Summary:
Jenny (Miri’s best friend from back in the day) has an adventure or misadventure on her own. It’s actually a rather terrifying one if you think about it too hard.

Additional Comments:
- The world of P.A.W.S. has many facets. This might be the one story in this rich world that didn’t quite line up. I know part was supposed to be fantasy and part modern New York City, but the fantasy part was interrupted by modern terminology like police and the normal world seemed interrupted by things like a market selling birds. Maybe I’m just crossing the worlds in my head.
- The slavery aspect of the book was odd. I guess that’s the part that doesn’t make much sense. If this kid lived in NYC, one would hope she had some street sense. Her loyalty is admirable but kinda dumb.
- As I said, P.A.W.S. is a very rich world, but I’m having a difficult time placing it. Much of it is flat-out geared to middle grade readers, but then it’ll mention an adult scene or depict a gory fight. Or, like this case, kind of casually have a child working as a slave cleaning bird cages. It’s neither good or bad, just bizarre.
- Narrator is decent.
- It’s nice to get a backstory for a very minor character.

Conclusion:
If you’re a P.A.W.S. fan, you won’t want to miss this little extra. If you’re not, I’d suggest starting with the first book to form your own opinion, then delving into this one if you enjoy the first official book.

Such a cute short story. I have read / listened to many books from Debbie. All the P.A.W.S. books are just awesome, I was glad to get these books.

I love animal books, and this one that featured many different kind of birds was such a charmer.
