About this listen

Unique to this title is a study of the themes present in The Admirable Crichton.

You may of course skip it, and go straight to the main title if you do not want any spoilers, and come back later to the beginning.

James Barrie grew up in a family where the mother was the dominant figure. When he was six years old, his elder brother died in an accident, a trauma from which his mother never recovered. As his mother played a dominant role in his life, her pain and suffering affected Barrie deeply and changed his life forever.

In The Admirable Crichton, a group of shipwrecked English aristocrats stake their survival on the ingenuity of their trustworthy butler.

Some Things Never Change

Barrie had some very definite ideas about British class structure and the difficulty in breaking out of the mold, and never are they more evident than in this play about an upper class family and their always proper and unflappable butler.
It's another one of those classic pieces of English literature that I somehow missed during my many years of schooling and I thoroughly enjoyed filling the gap.

Loved it!

It has been a long time since I've read a play and this was a fun one to read. I really enjoyed the characters and how their roles played out. I thought it was interesting the way the author commented on social class by having the classes switch roles. And I thought it was very sad that everything reverted back to the norm. Poor Crichton. The performance of the play was excellent. I thoroughly enjoyed listening to it.
