Acerca de esta escucha

Published 10 years after Collins’s most popular novel The Woman in White, Man and Wife centres on the confused and inequitable marriage laws of 19th-century Britain, reflecting the author’s own antipathy toward the institution. The plot follows the fortunes of a woman who, committed to marriage with one man, comes to believe that she may have inadvertently married his friend, according to the archaic laws of Scotland and Ireland. Collins shows himself to be a masterly storyteller, seamlessly moving the action from a country house to a suburb of London, and into a world of deceit and murder.

This is a fascinating piece of 19 century literature with terrific dialogue and a bizarre mixture of residual misogyny and criticism of manners and marital laws throughout the United Kingdom. The plot is, shall we say, intricate, at times straining credulity. The book would’ve been significantly improved by an aggressive editor who could have trimmed some of the unnecessary subplots and somewhat repetitious meanderings. Did we really need to learn about the owls at the summer house? The performance is Excellent, with distinct voicing

Intricate plot, good dialogue, desperately needed an editor

Extremely long, but that does not diminish this exciting page-turner. He truly outdoes Dickens with this book's dramatic unforeseen ending that's a thriller.

COLLINS OUT DOES DICKENS

This was an outstanding narrative performance, but I found the story a bit tedious and too long. It certainly highlighted the absurdities of archaic Scottish and Irish marital laws. I would recommend this to anyone who is a devoted fan of the narrator or the author, but I think it would try the patience of a casual listener.

Flawless narration

Fantastic story. Fast paced, great character development, I like it even more than Woman in White. The narrator was outstanding! Listen to it! Wilkie Collins is a very good writer. On to the next of his books.

So glad I listened to this

The narrator kept surprising me with his brilliant characterizations of the different parts in the story. The story is a bit long.

Very long and a bit tedious.

As usual, Nicholas Boulton is a fantastic narrator. His voices and acting skills are a delight. The story isn’t nearly as good as Collins’ most famous novels. Somewhat boring, blatantly sexist and more judgemental than usual. But not the WORST novel. Mildly distracting with a few moments of suspense.

Disappointing story, fabulous narration
