Publisher's summary

From Frida Kahlo and Elizabeth Taylor to Nora Ephron, Carrie Fisher, and Lena Dunham, this witty narrative explores what we can learn from the imperfect and extraordinary legacies of 29 iconic women who forged their own unique paths in the world.

Smart, sassy, and unapologetically feminine, In Praise of Difficult Women is an ode to the bold and charismatic women of modern history. Best-selling author Karen Karbo spotlights the spirited rule breakers who charted their way with little regard for expectations: Amelia Earhart, Helen Gurley Brown, Edie Sedgwick, Hillary Clinton, Amy Poehler, and Shonda Rhimes, among others. Their lives - imperfect, elegant, messy, glorious - provide inspiration and instruction for the new age of feminism we have entered. Karbo distills these lessons with wit and humor, examining the universal themes that connect us to each of these mesmerizing personalities today: success and style, love and authenticity, daring and courage. Being "difficult," Karbo reveals, might not make life easier, but it can make it more fulfilling-whatever that means for you.

Good but not great

I was disappointed that there were not more women of color in this book. I did enjoy the writing and learned about people I had never heard of before.

Real

It’s nice to hear the real story about women, and it’s never too late to have new roll models.

this book was quite lovely! I learnt a lot about those women - some were inspirational, and others were ground shaking :)

ilIt makes you feel good for being Difficult

loved it! It was nice to hear that I am not the only "difficult" women. It made me love and admire some more and I became a fan of new women!

I can relate

I think every woman should listen to this book at least once. If you ask me there aren’t enough of us “Difficult Women “. Time to speak up ladies. Damn those who don’t like it. Thank you for a great book.

I enjoyed it

Not the usual suspects. Interesting to hear about some women I hadn’t thought about as being groundbreaking.

Mixed thoughts

Definitely not some of the women I would have chosen to highlight, though I enjoyed the notorious RBG. I enjoyed the narrator more than the book.

Very interesting

There's so many more women that could have been added. All of the women were interesting, some I knew nothing about so it was good to hear about them. whether you like them or not..they were/are interesting difficult women from different decades and different careers. Humorous too!

Struggle to read but well written

For me, the book started slowly then got better and by the end began to lose some momentum again. I found my attention wandering while reading.

Difficult women

I enjoyed hearing about all the different women and their lives and how one certain person describes each one
