Publisher's summary
In this intimate, haunting literary memoir and New York Times Notable Book of the year, an American icon tells her own story for the first time - about a challenging and lonely childhood, the craft that helped her find her voice, and a powerful emotional legacy that shaped her journey as a daughter and a mother.
One of the most celebrated, beloved, and enduring actors of our time, Sally Field has an infectious charm that has captivated the nation for more than five decades, beginning with her first TV role at the age of 17. From Gidget's sweet-faced "girl next door" to the dazzling complexity of Sybil to the Academy Award-worthy ferocity and depth of Norma Rae and Mary Todd Lincoln, Field has stunned audiences time and time again with her artistic range and emotional acuity.
Yet there is one character who always remained hidden: the shy and anxious little girl within. With raw honesty and the fresh, pitch-perfect prose of a natural-born writer, and with all the humility and authenticity her fans have come to expect, Field brings listeners behind-the-scenes for not only the highs and lows of her star-studded early career in Hollywood, but deep into the truth of her lifelong relationships - including her complicated love for her own mother.
Powerful and unforgettable, In Pieces is an inspiring and important account of life as a woman in the second half of the 20th century.

Henry Winkler, launched into prominence as “The Fonz” in the beloved Happy Days, has transcended the role that made him who he is. Brilliant, funny, and widely regarded as the nicest man in Hollywood (though he would be the first to tell you that it’s simply not the case, he’s really just grateful to be here), Henry shares in this achingly vulnerable memoir the disheartening truth of his childhood, the difficulties of a life with severe dyslexia, the pressures of a role that takes on a life of its own, and the path forward once your wildest dream seems behind you.

Jennette McCurdy was six years old when she had her first acting audition. Her mother’s dream was for her only daughter to become a star, and Jennette would do anything to make her mother happy. So she went along with what Mom called “calorie restriction." She endured extensive at-home makeovers while Mom chided, “Your eyelashes are invisible, okay? You think Dakota Fanning doesn’t tint hers?” She was even showered by Mom until age sixteen while sharing her diaries, email, and all her income. In I’m Glad My Mom Died, Jennette recounts all this in unflinching detail.

Critic reviews
"Actor Sally Field, who has won two Academy Awards, delivers a powerhouse performance of her first memoir. Her aging timbre doesn't detract from the sensitivity that her personal narration brings to the story of her troubled childhood, early television roles, and ultimate success as a sophisticated and well-modulated actor and producer." (AudioFile)
"Field fuels this aching, lyrical memoir with frankness about her emotional childhood, her conflicted relationship with the late Burt Reynolds, and how acting helped her interpret life in all its pain and beauty." (Entertainment Weekly)
"Field lays it all on the line...In Pieces is an indelible portrait of a woman we all thought we knew." (Auburn Citizen)

From his rapid-fire stand-up comedy riffs to his breakout role in Mork & Mindy and his Academy Award-winning performance in Good Will Hunting, Robin Williams was a singularly innovative and beloved entertainer. He often came across as a man possessed, holding forth on culture and politics while mixing in personal revelations - all with mercurial, tongue-twisting intensity as he inhabited and shed one character after another with lightning speed. But as Dave Itzkoff shows in this revelatory biography, Williams’ comic brilliance masked a deep well of conflicting emotions and self-doubt.

Who knew?
I'm not a writer, reviewing books is difficult for me. However, I completely understand how this is on the best seller's list!!!
A a child of the 1950's I watched this REMARKABLE woman perform, and in the ignorance of youth, I chose not to do a bit of research to explore her... This book, for me, was a totally shocking revelation!
The candor and expressiveness of Ms. Fields will shock and surprise you. As a tv addict, I (in my mind) knew that those inside the small screen had BEAUTIFUL lives. The blunt description of the private life in "In Pieces" will shock you!
There are laughs... but there will certainly be tears as well.

A Heartbreaking life and a beautiful soul
Sally Field has always been a favorite of mine and I thoroughly enjoyed listening to her tell her own story in her own voice. It was heartbreaking a lot of the time and joyful in parts as well. It really made me look at my own life and break it down a bit, especially my relationship with my mother.
So much happened in her life and for so long. She truly loves acting and I would have to say that it definitely shows in her work. I could feel her devotion to doing well and getting works that she would be proud of.
I am so glad that I picked this book. It was a great piece and to listen to Sally reading it made it that much better. Hearing and feeling her words was amazing.

The Sally Field we never knew
This book was very revealing letting us glimpse inside Sally Fields’ life to see that it hasn’t been all sunshine and happiness, like many of her characters have been. It’s very sad and heartbreaking how traumatic her childhood was, which resulted in huge insecurities throughout her adult life.

glad for the happy ending
I love Sally Field the actress. I was a bit surprised at some new aspect of her and my heart goes out to her about her struggles they were a bit difficult to read sometimes. but I appreciate the book and the power it took to write it
