Publisher's summary

In this intimate, haunting literary memoir and New York Times Notable Book of the year, an American icon tells her own story for the first time - about a challenging and lonely childhood, the craft that helped her find her voice, and a powerful emotional legacy that shaped her journey as a daughter and a mother.

One of the most celebrated, beloved, and enduring actors of our time, Sally Field has an infectious charm that has captivated the nation for more than five decades, beginning with her first TV role at the age of 17. From Gidget's sweet-faced "girl next door" to the dazzling complexity of Sybil to the Academy Award-worthy ferocity and depth of Norma Rae and Mary Todd Lincoln, Field has stunned audiences time and time again with her artistic range and emotional acuity.

Yet there is one character who always remained hidden: the shy and anxious little girl within. With raw honesty and the fresh, pitch-perfect prose of a natural-born writer, and with all the humility and authenticity her fans have come to expect, Field brings listeners behind-the-scenes for not only the highs and lows of her star-studded early career in Hollywood, but deep into the truth of her lifelong relationships - including her complicated love for her own mother.

Powerful and unforgettable, In Pieces is an inspiring and important account of life as a woman in the second half of the 20th century.

Critic reviews

"Actor Sally Field, who has won two Academy Awards, delivers a powerhouse performance of her first memoir. Her aging timbre doesn't detract from the sensitivity that her personal narration brings to the story of her troubled childhood, early television roles, and ultimate success as a sophisticated and well-modulated actor and producer." (AudioFile)

"Field fuels this aching, lyrical memoir with frankness about her emotional childhood, her conflicted relationship with the late Burt Reynolds, and how acting helped her interpret life in all its pain and beauty." (Entertainment Weekly)

"Field lays it all on the line...In Pieces is an indelible portrait of a woman we all thought we knew." (Auburn Citizen)

Brave & Wonderful

Don’t expect a happy go lucky memoir. Sally opens herself up to the reader/listener in a way other celebrities in the public eye rarely have. A must listen/read in my mind!

Sad story...very surprising

I can't say that I loved this book because I found it hard to listen to at times. Not only is Sally's life story full of sadness, but the way she reads it, with all of her true emotion and feelings in every word that she reads, really brought it to life. I found myself wanting to find her and just give her a huge bear hug.

The book was very 'real' and it once again emphasizes that we know nothing about the public figures whom we think we know.

Loved it!

I love Sally Field’s voice. It’s so soothing. Her life was so complicated growing up. I hope she has peace for the rest of it.

As for the book, it’s a fascinating peek into someone’s life that you only see from the outside. I loved it and I love her more for writing this.

A woman and actor I admired t Syble hen, but now, more than ever!

Curious about what it takes to become an award-winning actor? Want to know what it took to fill the roles of Sybil and Norma? Interested in a good old hollywood story told by a fantastic storyteller? Then, look no further. You may find, just as I did, that you can’t put the book down until the very end.

I grew up watching The Flying Nun, yet I was too young to fully appreciate Gidget. Still, I knew that I wanted to hang out with Sally’s character that was the flying nun. I wanted her to be my friend. Sally’s fearless and faithful presentation of Sybil left me shaken and confused (yet touched), a reaction that I am convinced was shared by many, as her portrayal was the first time that many people were introduced to disassociative identity disorder. As I started my journey through my career, her character Norma provided insight to an aspect of America’s Industrial Revolution that I was soon to encounter. Many of her roles would inform my life. I thought she was fantastic as an actor (even more so now), yet wondered why she was not in more roles. Something that I would come to understand as I matured and learned more about roles available to mature female actors. Although I was not one to faithfully follow articles written in entertainment magazines, a few major stories involving Sally caught my eye. Her first pregnancy and relationship with Burt Reynolds were hard to miss if you had a television. I feel as if I have been honored by her sharing her story. I find her to be a wonderfully flawed, human, role model. In retrospect, I intuitively understood this actor’s need to select roles of import to women. Thank you for allowing us to see your journey, Mrs. Sally Fields.

A lot of pieces left out

This is an enjoyable autobiography. I was hoping for a little more detail about some of her later movie roles which she completely left out. Seems like she got to a point where she fulfilled her commitment to her publisher and figured she could stop. Still enjoyable.
