About this listen

The story of a boy and his imaginary friend - told by the imaginary friend

Zach should’ve outgrown his imaginary friend by now. He knows this. He’s 11, long past the days when kids are supposed to go on epic make-believe adventures with their invisible friends. But after the death of his father five years ago, all Zach wanted was an escape from the real world. So his imaginary friend, Shovel, hasn’t faded away like the other kids’ have. Their imaginary friendship grew stronger.

But now Zach’s in middle school, and things are getting awkward. His best friend ditched him for a cooler crowd. His classmates tease him in the hallways. He still misses his dad. Reality is the worst. Which is why Zach makes regular visits to a fantasy world with Shovel. But is Zach’s overactive imagination helping him deal with loss or just pushing people away? Poignant, humorous, and breathtaking, Imaginary is an inventive story of friendship, loss, and growing up...as only an imaginary friend could tell it.

Just one thing bugs me...

If the girl is big into spy fiction, why doesn't she suggest fingerprinting the rodent box and food to prove that neither she nor the sorta-main character handled them?

The other problem I have with this story is an old one: Adults say that rather than fighting, you should get help from a teacher. I don't know what sort of experience those adults have, but in the world I grew up in, running to an adult might... /MIGHT/ get the offender to back off for a little while, but it also resulted in everyone (and I do mean /everyone/) giving you grief for having to run to a teacher like a little cry-baby. To me, running to a teacher is the single worst piece of advice to give a child. No wonder it's so popular.
Also, I've never known a principle to be anywhere near this perceptive.

Aside from that, this was a wonderful story with a great reader, and I thank you both.

Love it

Wow, my kids chose this one but it’s one of my favorites too. I’m going to have to check out the rest of Lee Bacons audio books because I also love Interview with the Robot!

GREAT AUTHOR!

I first read The Last Human and immediately wanted more from the author and narrator. This didn’t disappoint! Great job!

Surprising, moving, and sweet…

Touching tween-grade story about an imaginary friend. Something even a 40 yr old can enjoy. :-)
