About this listen

As fashion maven Cookie Chanel tracks a murderer at the Kentucky Derby, all bets are off....

When Cookie Chanel lands a dream assignment of providing vintage hats for a high-society Kentucky Derby party, she's brimming with excitement. Leaving her mother and best friend to mind the store at It's Vintage Y'all, Cookie packs up her psychic cat and races to Kentucky.

But before she can hang her hat, her enthusiasm is dampened when the rider of the potential Derby-winning horse is put out to pasture. Now, she's saddled with the jockey's ghost, who insists she find his killer.

With suspects ranging from an odds-on favorite to a dark horse, Cookie may just find herself in a dead heat before the photo finish....

Narrator

It would be better to use the same narrator through out the whole series. Switching is just confusing. The voices you've gotten used too, then they are totally changed in the next book. Makes you want to stop listening.

Shouldn’t have changed narrator...

I loved the first four books in this collection - “Haunted Vintage Mystery”. Narrator Tara Ochs spoke clearly and gave each character so much personality. She is so gifted with accents and tone of voice.
To my great disappointment, the fifth book had a new narrator, Angie Hickman, whom in my opinion had a nasal somewhat monotone voice. Worst of all, she sounded as though she were bored with what she was reading! I couldn’t get through the first chapter and requested a refund from Audible.
The stories are excellent but with an audible book so much depends on the narrator. Please, please bring Tara Ochs back!

New narrator ruined my audible experience

I listened to the first four books in this series and really enjoyed them. The narrator was very good and the stories are cute. I've just muddled through the 5th book. I can't tell you much about the story due to the change in narrator. I just wanted it to stop! It's always jarring when a series changes narrators, but this change has ruined my Audible experience with this series. The narrator makes everyone sound either like a child or like someone with a mouth full of cotton trying to talk. The previous books were charming and the accent, while not sounding like a Georgia accent necessarily, was pleasing. I won't be listening to any more of these books unless the narrator changes.

Performance is fine, setting is so badly done

As a fluffy cozy, it's not so bad, and the ghosts are entertaining, but if your familiarity with horses, horse racing, the Kentucky Derby and Louisville is anything deeper than "I think I saw like five minutes of coverage on NBC once and could maybe find Kentucky on a map with names" give this one a hard pass. Even characters who are allegedly jockeys, trainers, and owners are laughably, incredibly wrong about everything. The author can't even be b
othered to NAME THE HORSE the main character's acquaintance owns. It makes me suspicious of any other books in the series set somewhere outside a vintage clothing store, wondering whether they were as terrible at research as they were with this one.

Very bad writing and terrible narration

This book is really awful. The worst part is the narration. The new reader makes Cookie sound like a bored teenager, the voices of all of the older women sound alike, and some of the men sound like women. There is no enthusiasm in the reading, and the story just seems to drone on and on. Of course part of the problem is that this book is insipid and uninspired. Cookie seems to have lost all of her gumption and spirit. Suddenly she is more than willing to figure out who killed the ghosts without argument or comment. There are only minor offhand comments about fashion and that used to be a unique and interesting part of these books. And the cat doesn't play much of a role anymore because of the constant and boring reminders that she isn't really a cat but is the host for Cookie's grandmother. I really enjoyed the first 4 books of this series, but #5 is a disaster. I wish I could return it as well as #6, but my 365 return window has expired.

I will not be listening to anymore of This series

Since changing readers I could not even get through the book. That little girl voice was like nails on a blackboard And made the book Totally unbelievable. The characters are also very much alike. I will not be listening to the rest of the series!

So disappointed

I recounted audible because I was missing this light hearted series but something happened between the books 1-4 and this one. The storyline became repetitive where I felt like I kept thinking how many times are they going to tell us the cat is ##### or she can see #####.

And this narrator. Kill me NOW! She talks so slow and cannot mimic what Rosie did in the prior stories so all of the characters were off. Even on 1.75 speed I was losing patience with her voice. She butchers the men’s voices and destroys the southern drawl.

***This is very likely the first book I will return to audible for credits back.
