About this listen

Once upon a time. Happily ever after. Such are the classic promises of fairy tales. Yet in Texas we find a twist to the familiar storyline. In If the Devil Had a Wife, there is still the battle of Good vs. Evil, a beautiful maiden, a wealthy suitor, a kingdom of riches and the wicked witch, but any similarity with Cinderella and Snow White ends there. With the help of her life partner and an attorney (always necessary in these modern times), Nelda Stark executes a devious plan that elevates fraud and theft to a new high. A massive coverup reaches into the Texas Attorney General's Office, stealing from not only the Stark family, but the federal and state governments.

What a Tale!!

As a Texas only vaguely familiar with the Stark name I found the story totally fascinating and have already been to the computer to learn more. I would recommend it to anyone who wants an interesting read.

Great book but....

As a native of Orange that grew up with the rumors and suspicion surrounding the Stark family this was a great book. I'm sure most of it is true. My biggest complaint is how the last 2 hours drags.. it's like trying to get off the phone with someone so they keep talking about the same thing over and over. I got it, I got it.. stopthe repetition and unnecessary over description of everything. Started feeling like it was running out of steam and material.

What a story!!!

I loved the history side of the book. My grandfather P.K. Clayton worked as a personal bodyguard for the Stark estate, so this book is a very personal one to me. I can remember as a kid, my grandfather would tell me stories of how Mrs. Nelda was so good to him. But now I know how crooked she really was.

Unbelievable!

Hard to believe people can be so corrupt. Such a sad story due to greed.

Combine a great audio book with road trip!

Would you listen to If the Devil Had a Wife again? Why?

Having read the book, I found that listening to the audiobook refreshed my memory and reminded me of some details I had forgotten.

What about A.T. Chandler’s performance did you like?

Mr. Chandler does a great job of presenting this appropriately as a bigger than life Texas story! Great delivery!

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

I was intrigued by the twists and turns of seeing a calculating and methodical plan unfold at the expense of many innocent and yet some guilty folks. Big money and power and the corruption that too often accompanies it is on full view here.

Any additional comments?

This book has something for anyone who enjoys a Texas story involving history as well as human nature. I wonder if more stories have come to light since this book was published? We are ready to hear them!!!

Wow wow wow

This story breaks my heart. Being from SW LA, with roots in Starks, I was very familiar with all the places and some of the names. When justice finally comes to the Stark family, I hope the family makes a movie about this fascinating story.

Laborious

This was laborious beyond belief. Minute details overwhelmed the story and the reader. Beware when there are fewer than 100 reviews. If this book had a wife, she'd have put it in the shredder.
