About this listen
Do you find yourself conflicted and in a love-hate relationship with your family?
Do you struggle to put your needs, emotions, and mental well-being first?
Do you wish to forgive those who have wronged you and yourself?
Are you ready to walk away from toxic relationships?
Author Phoebe Chester's book, If You Knew My Family, You’d Understand, is a guide in managing the emotional and mental trauma of dealing with toxic family members and recognizing the importance of putting yourself first.
Honest, raw, and touching, Chester's book is a powerful resource for anyone seeking advice and support in dealing with toxic family members. It is never easy to do so, nor does it ever feel right, but Chester's words will inspire you, make you feel seen and heard, and help you know you aren't alone.
In this book, you'll discover:
- How to practice self-forgiveness.
- Why the people we love can sometimes demonstrate toxic and manipulative behaviors.
- Why you might need to walk away from toxic relationships.
Blood may be thicker than water, and we are ingrained to accept and never turn our back on family. However, Chester sheds light on the impact of toxic familial relationships on our mental, emotional, and physical health.
If you are ready and willing, If You Knew My Family, You'd Understand is the perfect companion to putting yourself first and letting go of those holding you back.
Stop putting yourself last, turn over that leaf, and begin a journey with you as the captain of your happiness.

Story
One day, I was at a restaurant with my wife, and as we were finishing up our meal, our server handed us a survey form. Realizing neither of us had a pen, my wife told me to ask the server if we could borrow one to fill out the form. Instead of doing this, I walked to the parking lot, retrieved a pen from our car, and walked back to our table. It would’ve been easier to just borrow a pen, but I opted for the route that involved less social interaction. I did this automatically, without even thinking.

Learn how to handle toxic relationships
In “If You Knew My Family, You’d Understand” discover the truth about toxic relationships and the danger of remaining subject to them long-term. Author Phoebe Chester breaks down the characteristics of what toxic behaviour looks like and the emotional, mental, and physical toll it takes on a victim.
You’ll appreciate the real-life stories of victims who have shared their perspectives about their toxic family relationships. Chester also provides reflection questions along the way so you can personalize your learning and explore how you are being impacted by a narcissist or other toxic person.
Chester guides the reader to consider the question, “how toxic is too toxic?” and frames a break in contact with a toxic person so that you can see it in a healthy, self-respecting way. She also provides 6 steps to try before leaving so you’ll know when a relationship is truly over. From there, Chester addresses the aftermath of breaking ties including forgiving yourself, maintaining a healthy headspace and keeping a focus on yourself as you learn and grow in respecting your heart and feeling your feelings.
I loved the voice of the narrator and the topic resonated personally as I have experienced cutting out toxic relationships from my life. I agree wholeheartedly with what has been written. I especially recommend this book for those recovering from narcissistic relationships with parents, siblings or other close family members.

Impactful audiobook!
This is an excellent book for anyone struggling with difficult family dynamics. One of the strengths of this book is its focus on the emotional toll that toxic family relationships can take on a person. Phoebe does a great job of pulling the reader in. Her advice is well written, practical and sensitive toward the topic. She discussed some hard truths and really taking a deep look into a potentially harmful relationship and how to go about starting over if necessary. I love the personal connection the author provided
The author does a great job of providing first-hand stories and experiences to help you feel connected. One of the strengths of this book is its focus on the emotional toll that toxic family relationships can take on a person. It’s good to be reaffirmed that everyone has the right to liberate from the bondage of selfish behaviors and pursue happiness. I loved the narrator's voice, and the topic resonated personally as I have experienced cutting out toxic relationships from my life. I like the reflection questions throughout the book to help you stop and think about your own family. I recommend this audiobook.

So Relatable & Extremely Helpful!
I feel so validated by this book! It is written and narrated in a matter-of-fact way - but with great compassion. In a non-judgmental view of the trauma many of us endure due to toxic relationships in our own family, the author shows us a way out of chronic emotional pain and into peace and self-love. Like a trusted therapist or advisor, she guides you through the recovery process from dysfunctional family and/or relationships to a life of strength, self- empowerment, and the love & happiness you deserve. She even included 40 journal prompts! I highly recommend this book!

Relief from a dysfunctional family
It is said you are the sum of the people you spend time with. Unfortunately (or fortunately, depending on your perspective) that includes family. You may not realize, but family has a bigger impact on you than you imagine. They define who you are and what you become, and your habits, traits, self-worth are formed through observation and interaction with family. In fact, it is said one must do their work around family to release ourselves from their grip.
That’s where If You Knew My Family, You’d Understand by Phoebe Chester comes in. It will help you manage the difficult aspects of dealing with toxic family members and recognize the importance of putting yourself first. It offers a breadth of knowledge to help you weave the difficult and destructive nature of family relationships. You can’t keep excusing the behavior of family members but stand up for yourself and this book will show you how.
