Acerca de esta escucha

Uncover the secret annals of untold history in these eighteen medieval manuscripts. Each tortured scribe will bring you face to face with ancient horrors lurking in cursed castles, wild woodlands, haunted hamlets, and mysterious monasteries.

Including a lineup of authors both established and emerging, HOWL Society Press presents the first-ever anthology of historical horror from the medieval period, fittingly introduced by the writer who arguably started it all: Christopher Buehlman, author of the medieval horror epic Between Two Fires.

As the title says the stories were really good but the majority of the narrators were pretty bad at one point I wondered if one actually knew how to read. Another one just kept reading without pausing so I couldn't tell when a sentence would end or begin. They were all so inconsistent with skill and quality.

Great Stories, Stinky Narrators

I enjoyed the stories themselves, but I didn’t enjoy a few of the narrators and they made some of the stories tough to get through.

It was ok

Not every story was for me but that’s how anthologies work. David Worn’s “Dark Quadrivium” was the standout but there’s some fun, original work in here for fans of the medieval macabre.

Some very strong stuff.

Pandora Beatrix (when doing a bad fake English accent) and Joshua Davos are two of the worst narrators I have ever heard in my life. Absolutely unbearable.

Stories were hit and miss, but that’s just how anthologies are. Overall quite good.

... know this.

1. buehlman wrote the foreward here, thats all.
2. this collection really makes you realize just how good "between two fires" really was/is.
3. a few of the stories are actually really good. the first couple, in particular. and brian evenson's stand out. but whoever narrated the chapter that audible has indexed as chapter six should never be allowed to read this kind of work again. its just... hard pass. but hey, its an anthology and you cant win em all.
4. lastly, the whole experience--while occasionally, nay often--enjoyable, kinda just makes me wish i was reading "between two fires" for the first time again. and yes, i know thats like the fourth reference ive made to B2F but it really is that good. it is to medieval horror what lord of the rings is to fantasy. read it and tell me im wrong.

if you like buehlman or between two fires...

Really great collection of stories.

I'll note that this one has a lot of gore, but I'd say it is effectively used. It attaches, in each case, to a thematic point of the story rather than simply being gratuitous.

I will note though you may want to skip it if body horror squicks you out!

Unique and Evocation Collection

I liked many of these stories, they didn’t need to be longer or have “more of a point”, imo. Some fell flat, others worked very well.

That said, Joshua Davos should never be hired to narrate any audiobooks ever again. He makes very bizarre choices for inflection and pacing, which makes the stories he narrates difficult to listen to. I ended up skipping the stories he narrated and just reading them on my kindle.

Decent

Gory and wicked and wonderfully creepy.
One of the best anthologies in awhile if you’re a horror fan!

Wonderful Dark Ages Macabre

The stories are wonderful, ranging from creepy to weird to gruesome. Excellent for fans of folk horror or dark fiction, especially those with a preference for atmosphere, folklore, and period pieces.
That being said, several of the narrators sounded like they were reading the text for the first time (or doing VO for the first time) or were struggling with the placement of line breaks. Others rushed through the narration or paid more attention to ascents than enunciating. A bit of attention to editing or some second takes could have fixed this. I'd recommend getting this book in print or Kindle format to properly enjoy the stories that suffer from poor interpretation.

Great Horror Anthology, Needs Better Narrators

Great variety of horror stories and real attention to period detail. Great voice cast of different actors. highly recommended!

Outstanding Medieval Telling.
