In his short life, the Guyanese intellectual Walter Rodney emerged as one of the leading thinkers and activists of the anticolonial revolution, leading movements in North America, South America, the African continent, and the Caribbean. In each locale, Rodney found himself a lightning rod for working class Black Power. His deportation catalyzed 20th-century Jamaica's most significant rebellion, the 1968 Rodney riots, and his scholarship trained a generation how to think politics at an international scale. In 1980, shortly after founding of the Working People's Alliance in Guyana, the 38-year-old Rodney would be assassinated.

In his magnum opus, How Europe Underdeveloped Africa, Rodney incisively argues that grasping "the great divergence" between the West and the rest can only be explained as the exploitation of the latter by the former. This meticulously researched analysis of the abiding repercussions of European colonialism on the continent of Africa has not only informed decades of scholarship and activism, it remains an indispensable study for grasping global inequality today.

So comprehensive. A must listen for everyone!

Loved this. Well researched and indepth history. I have some many notes on parts of history I was never taught in school. I have so much more to research, but this was a book I should have read/listened to a long time ago. I hope you have the courage to listen and take in this history and it's effect on the present day.

Listening to this book felt like a revelation

I personally enjoy learning about history because it gives me a better understanding of why the world we live in is the way it is. Listening to this book helped me understand why a lot of things are the way they are in Africa. It helped me empathize with the current struggles and not be overly critical of the people for being in a state they did not choose.
I understand there need to be accountability and responsibility from the African people as well (we can’t just blame Europe for everything that has gone wrong), but the fact still remains that our present world was shaped by the decisions of Europeans to accumulate wealth.

Holy Book

This is the African Holy Book. A must read for anyone who wants to break the chain of oppression. Rest In Peace Orisha Walter Rodney.

you learn a lot about the patterns Africa is struggling to break from this book. beautifully narrated history of Africa's development prior to colonization. if for nothing else, you'll learn a good amount about the rich history of the continent.

Always Educating and Posing the Question

Walter Rodney is always on point with the education and rounding up to the important forward progressing questions to stimulate growth. He gives factual information with true basis so that the reader can think honestly about how to move forward. the reader gave good cadence and inflection to allow the mind to comprehend what the writer is saying. Great book for socio political and socio economic thinkers. Loved this read.....
