Story
Ricky Desmond has been through this all before. If he could just get through to his mother, he could convince her that he doesn't belong at Brookline. From the man who thinks he can fly to the woman who killed her husband, the other patients are nothing like him; all he did was lose his temper just a little bit, just the once. But when Ricky is selected by the sinister Warden Crawford for a very special program - a program that the warden claims will not cure him but perfect him - Ricky realizes that he may not be able to wait for his mom a second longer.

Story
Felix Allsey is a travel writer with a keen eye for the paranormal, and he's carved out a unique, if only slightly lucrative, niche for himself in nonfiction; he writes travelogues of the country's most haunted places, after haunting them himself. When he convinces the owner of the infamous Rotterdam Mansion to let him stay on the premises for two weeks, he believes he's finally found the location that will bring him a best seller. Then things start going wrong: screams from upstairs, figures in the thresholds, and more than what should be in any basement.

So while his new home isn’t perfect, it’s livable. The rent is low, the property managers are friendly, and the odd little mysteries don’t nag at him too much. Sparrow “Ro” Meadowcroft is about to get the promotion she’s always dreamed of–curator of the museum where she works. She loves old things and the history that surrounds them, so when a patron leaves some items to the museum, Ro is eager to dig in. The sword in the stone that comes with those items is clearly a joke. A well-made but obvious replica meant to be a conversation starter. Why anyone would think that belonged in the museum is beyond her, but she can’t resist taking a crack at it and finding out if she’s the chosen one. And as it turns out...she is.

Publisher's summary
An all-new creepy fantasy series from the New York Times best-selling author of Asylum.
After escaping a harsh school where punishment was the lesson of the day, 17-year-old Louisa Ditton is thrilled to find employment as a maid at a boarding house.
But soon after her arrival at Coldthistle House, Louisa begins to realize that the house’s mysterious owner, Mr. Morningside, is providing much more than lodging for his guests. Far from a place of rest, the house is a place of judgment, and Mr. Morningside and his unusual staff are meant to execute their own justice on those who are past being saved.
Louisa begins to fear for a young man named Lee who is not like the other guests. He is charismatic and kind, and Louisa knows that it may be up to her to save him from an untimely judgment. But in this house of distortions and lies, how can Louisa be sure who to trust?

Whoa..!
I didn’t know if I would really like this book all that much but I loved it! I’ve already got the next book and the rest is in my wish list and my ears are patiently awaiting me to hurry up and keep listening so I can get to the next one!!!! The ending got me hard! I kept trying to be a detective during the book to figure out each character that visited Coldthistle house, some I got wrong but some I got right and it’s such fun! Can’t wait to continue listening to the next one!

Incomplete
Some of this was interesting, but overall it just felt incomplete. There were extraneous details / plot points that seemed useless filler and then very large holes in what could have been an interesting story. The narrator was pretty good with accents and voices.

predictable with no real consequences
it was competently written but unoriginal. there are no real conflicts because every sacrifice is somehow undone by a deus ex machina

good story lacking performance
I found the performance was lacking due to the performer putting the wrong voice inflections in character speech as well as doing the same accent for different charters of different ages. it made it a little confusing.
I loved the story though.

One heck of A writer
Amazing storyteller, crisp defined characters, and awesome pacing. Narration sounded a little to cheerful for the subject matter, yet didn't detract from the haunting and original story. Worth a credit.

Captivating
Absolutely amazing! Between the story itself and the performance of the reader, I had a hard time leaving the car to go into work. Absolutely shocking, exciting and thrilling to the very end!

Worth it
Great listen! I really enjoyed the twists of characters and plot. This is the first of a trilogy- I’d bought the 2nd and 3rd at a bookstore and was glad to find the first here!
