About this listen

"Tell me how a person judges his or her self-esteem", says pioneering psychologist Nathaniel Branden, "and I will tell you how that person operates at work, in love, in sex, in parenting, in every important aspect of existence - and how high he or she is likely to rise. The reputation you have with yourself - your self-esteem - is the single most important factor for a fulfilling life."

  • How to grow in self-confidence and self-respect
  • How to nurture self-esteem in children
  • How to break free of guilt and fear of others’ disapproval
  • How to honor the self - the ethics of rational self-interest

Nathaniel Branden‘s pioneering work in the field of self-esteem over seven decades contributed to the evolution of the concept from obscurity to greater levels of clarity and acceptance. He wrote nearly 20 books on self-esteem, including such influential works as The Psychology of Self-Esteem, How to Raise Your Self-Esteem, The Six Pillars of Self-Esteem, and The Art of Living Consciously. In addition to his extensive work as a writer, Branden worked as a lecturer, therapist, and corporate consultant specializing in assisting modern businesses employ the principles of self-esteem to achieve greater levels of success. He also the founded The Branden Institute for Self-Esteem, a counseling center in Los Angeles, California. He died in 2014.

Branden’s book is excellent; added content is distracting

This is a very worthwhile audiobook for understanding how to improve your self-esteem. Nathaniel Branden has a deep knowledge of many aspects of this topic. Many times you will hear something he says and have to stop and reflect how it is shown in your life. He also has practical ideas such as sentence completion questions that you can use on your own to help yourself. Nightingale Conant has added some background content to this production. Part of it is music, which can be useful to break up the constant flow of information and ideas. They also use additional narrators which help in some ways. However, they also attempt to provide some “context” at the beginning as well as offering their own “service” online at the end. These aspects of the audiobook are superfluous. (I later found that the “service” they were offering was unavailable.) Overall this is an excellent audiobook and I would recommend it. I will probably go out and buy the hard copy of the book as well.

Beg & end feels like a sales pitch. Rest is good.

The book is read like they are trying to sell you something else. Middle chapters like 3 through most of 13 is the best and feels more like a real book. but definitely has enough good parts that I want to go back through this book again. so good definitely outweighs the bad.

AWESOME 🔥🔥🔥

I was listening to The book Codependent no more by Melody Beattie who I adore beyond words for all the help she's given me through the years, she mentioned this book and endorsed it highly, I bought it and have found tremendous insight and inspiration into so many different aspects of life, I've been a self taught person my whole life, I very much appreciate this book and especially enjoyed it and will be going through it many more times in the future, only a few books have attained this status in my Audible library and I definitely have added this one to the list of must to go through again and again as the teachings are superb beyond words description 🔥🔥🔥

Content is excellent. Performance is outdated

I listened to this audiobook in one go and immediately recommended it to others. This is a fascinating book with a lot to gain from. For some reason though the second chapter seems to be a repeat of part of the first chapter, but from chapter 3 to the end, this book is an absolutely invaluable source of knowledge. You can tell from the sound effects that this was recorded in the early 80s, but you stop noticing that after a while. Also, the author reads quite slowly, so I'd recommend listening on 1.5 or 1.75 speed. Excellent book, will be listening again.

Best of Branden’s audiobooks

chapter 2 is a repeat of chapter 1. Other than that the book is really a great way to introspect.

One of Nathaniel’s greatest.
