About this listen

Murder is always a bestseller… first in the new bibliophile mystery series!

The streets of San Francisco would be lined with hardcovers if rare book expert Brooklyn Wainwright had her way. And her mentor wouldn't be lying in a pool of his own blood on the eve of a celebration for his latest book restoration. With his final breath he leaves Brooklyn a cryptic message, and gives her a priceless - and supposedly cursed - copy of Goethe's Faust for safekeeping. Brooklyn suddenly finds herself accused of murder and theft, thanks to the humorless - but attractive - British security officer who finds her kneeling over the body. Now she has to read the clues left behind by her mentor if she is going to restore justice.

Critic reviews

This first in a new series is going to launch Carlisle to a bestselling position and have readers looking forward to the next installment of delightfully eccentric characters, droll dialogue and a meticulously planned crime. Bibliophile heroine Brooklyn Wainwright is brilliant, feisty and funny.” ( Romantic Times)

Would you listen to Homicide in Hardcover again? Why?

The book is a fun easy read & there's enough explanation of the esoterica of book binding to keep that from becoming confusing. The plot is plausible enough to keep you involved and the main character's family is a welcome comic relief. Overall a good 'airport'/beach book which you can pick up and put down as needed

What aspect of Eileen Stevens’s performance would you have changed?

The narrator really needs to brush up on her pronunciations of place names/locations. In another book I cringed when she said

A good cozy mystery but the narrator needs work

The author Katie Carlisle does a great job of describing every detail, I can see every scene in my head. Many different characters with unique backgrounds. I have to continue listening to the series.

great read

I own all the books in this series and was pleased to see them on audible. BUT the narrator does such a terrible job with men's voices, esp. the sexy, British male lead, that it makes listening painful. So disappointed. And esp. disappointed that after all the negative reviews of the narrator the publisher has continued to use her for the whole series. Would be much better if she didn't try to do "masculine" or "British" and just read the parts in her normal voice, which is actually very pleasant. This review is of the narrator and not the book, which I would easily give 4.5*.

I absolutely loved this book. It had it all...twists and turns, suspense, romance, and humor. I wasn't expecting it to be as fantastic as it was. This book kept my attention the whole time!!!! I hope the next one is just as good.

I ENJOYED THIS SO MUCH!!!!

cozy-mystery, amateur-sleuth, women-sleuths, wine

Interesting look into the world of restoration of old books, hippie communes on the west coast, viticulture and oenoculture.
Eileen Stevens does the chirpy really well.

A different world!

I have to agree with another reviewer about the reader trying to sound masculine and British. She should just read using her own voice or get a male reader for the male parts.

Great book
