About this listen
When a plane crashed in the quaint town of Castor, it unleashed a virus that turned everyone into hissing, blood-thirsty, undead monsters. Monsters that could transmit their plague in seconds, that could run as fast as dogs, and that could fuse themselves together to create massive mutated beasts. Four teens - Connor, Seth, Amanita, and Nicole - fought for their lives to secure vital data from the plane wreckage, some of them paying the ultimate sacrifice.
Now they need to get to San Diego with their secret, but the plague is spreading too fast. They have no friends or family, nowhere to hide, and death lurks behind every corner. Worse, the hissers are evolving, and it may be impossible to stop them at all.

Story
In the late 1800s, deep in the woods of a small New England town, something was called forth for the purposes of revenge and death. Something evil, something bloodthirsty, something unstoppable. Now, what has lain dormant for over a century has been released on four unsuspecting teens trying to enjoy a quiet weekend alone. All they want to do is watch some movies and play some games. But their fun is cut short, and what starts as a series of strange and unsuspecting events soon turns into a bloodbath in which no one is safe.

100,000 years ago the object hit the lake at the deepest point, quickly sinking into its mile-deep Stygian darkness. The sheets of ice closed, time moved on and the land forgot. But over the centuries, legends grew of people vanishing, of strange, deformed animals and of an unexplained luminescence down in the lake depths. When Marcus Stenson won the lucrative contract to create a sturgeon fish farm on the site of disused paper mill on the shore of Lake Baikal, he thought he had won the lottery and refused to listen to the chilling folktales....

Story
In the wake of the cataclysmic events that reshaped our world in 2020, a sense of relief washed over us all. By late 2023, I think we were ready to just live life again. I know I was. It was a time to make new friends and put the past to rest. Rayne and I hadn’t known each other long, but we were building a solid friendship, nothing more. It was our common interests that sent us on vacation together to my remote cabin. What we didn’t, couldn’t know, was that we were on a collision course with the end of the world as we knew it.

The living dead are more alive than ever! Zombies have become more than an iconic monster for the 21st century: They are now a phenomenon constantly revealing as much about ourselves - and our fascination with death, resurrection, and survival - as our love for the supernatural or post-apocalyptic speculation. Our most imaginative literary minds have been devoured by these incredible creatures and produced exciting, insightful, and unflinching new works of zombie fiction.

Story
In AD 1119, a group of nine crusaders became known as the Poor Fellow-Soldiers of Christ and of the Temple of Solomon - a militant monastic order charged with protecting pilgrims and caravans traveling on the roads to and from the Holy Land. In time, the Knights Templar would grow in power and, ultimately, be laid low. But a small offshoot of the Templars endure and have returned to the order's original mission: to defend the roads of the world and guard those who travel on them.

The Superpox-99 virus has wiped out nearly the entire human race. Governments have collapsed. Cities have become graveyards filled with unspeakable horror. People have resorted to scavenging from the dead, or taking from the living. The entire industrialized world has become a wasteland of abandoned cars, decaying bodies, and feral animals. To stay alive, U.S. Deputy Marshal Mason Raines must forage for food, water, and gasoline while outgunning those who seek to take advantage of the apocalyptic anarchy. Together with his giant Irish wolfhound, Bowie, he aligns with survivors of the town of Boone in a life and death struggle against a gang of violent criminals. With each deadly encounter, Mason is force to accept his place as one of the nation's few remaining lawmen. In a world now populated by escaped convicts, paranoid mutants, and government hit squads, his only hope to save the townspeople is to enforce his own brand of frontier justice.

More Hissers = Must run faster!
The first Hissers book was released in Audible on 07-26-11 and I was surprised by how much I enjoyed it. I have read/listened to a great deal of undead themed books, but the unique aspects of Hissers and the unexpected twists made it a story that has stuck with me. I have been checking the Audible library on and off over the past 5+ years hoping to find the 2nd Hissers book. I was so excited that Audible finally added Hissers II: Death March on 06-22-17, which is the second book of the expected trilogy!
If you liked the first book getting the second one is a no brainier, and if you have not read the first Hissers book, STOP NOW and go get it!
The biggest issue with Hissers II is that it is simply too short and after such a long wait I was hoping to get more. That being said, I did enjoy the 2nd installment to the continuation of the Hissers story. I was pleasantly surprised that even though the second book had a different narrator the transition between books was fairly smooth as Shawn Zuzek did a good job of integrating his narration with that of the first book.
Hissers II definitely requires the reader be willing to stretch the limitations of reality and there are quiet a few situations that are challenging to accept, but if you are willing to allow yourself to simply jump in and go with it, the ride is fast paced and entertaining. I really have enjoyed both Hissers books and I am hoping that the wait for the third book will not be as long of a wait as it has been for the 2nd one!

Better than first book, and first book was good!
I was surprised to like the first book. The last zombie-ish book I read was a YA series called the Rains by Gregg Hurwitz. I normally love Gregg Hurwitz, I have read and loved all of his other books but I think this one was just too young for me. I was disappointed bc I figured if anyone could pull off a good YA zombie type series he could. Well look no further bc Hissers by Ryan C Thomas may be YA genre and have teens as protagonist but these books rock! First book starts with a government plane crashing and releasing a deadly virus in a small town. 4 teens fight to escape along with getting important info from the plane. The first book had a lord of the flies vibe, gore beyond belief, kids having to make awful choices and they are forced to grow up and you grow with them and share their pain! Oh and the author is not afraid to kill off anyone so don’t think you know who is gonna live!! The second book takes off and thankfully guides the story down a suspenseful gore filled road of survival as the characters left from the 1st book desperately try to save the day! It ends with some closure but definitely leaves you waiting in anticipation for the final 3rd book. Trust me if you like the zombie genre you will love this approach, unique! Narration was 1st class!!

Good but rushed
BIG SPOILERS!!!
I enjoyed catching up with the two characters from the first book. I feel like this whole apocalypse thing got rushed though. I wish time was taken in showing the Hisser's spread throughout the US instead of just having it.. already be.
The narrator is really good, with one exception. Whenever be talks for the two young kids or the adult female.. it is awful. Sounding whiny and like everyone is asking a question. I know teenagers are whiny but, it really took me out of it. Even when they are calm they are whiny and out of breath.
Otherwise this is a pretty good entry. But you need to be a fan of this series to sit through the sequel.

Hissers II is a Howl!
Hissers was one of the first novels I listed to on Audible and it got me hooked. Hissers II is a fantastic action packed, high speed, undead mutant zombie adventure follow up. In this sequel Thomas picks up almost exactly where the first book ends. The characters are still running, as hard as they can, from the creatures which are not really zombies but the victims of human genome experiments gone mad. The characters have little time to contemplate the difference however as they dodge their way across the country hoping to get the research (found in book one) that created the things to a genetics lab and a group of top scientists that they hope will still be there when they arrive. The story is still told from the perspective of the kids, although more adults are present this time, which keeps things focused and prevents overthinking the situation. Shawn Zuzek provides the narration and does an excellent job with the voices.

So Sad
I am a HUGE fan of Hissers... the first book. It was an almost perfect 'zombie/monster' book. After listening to it, I scrambled to download everything Thomas had written.
This book is a tedious predictable rehash of book 1.
If you're looking for something to listen to, try the Mountain Man omnibus or one of Rothfuss' books.
