Perceptive, funny, and nostalgic, E. B. White's stroll around Manhattan remains the quintessential love letter to the city, written by one of America's foremost literary figures. The New York Times named Here Is New York one of the 10 best books ever written about the metropolis, and The New Yorker called it "the wittiest essay, and one of the most perceptive, ever done on the city".

Included with this essay are two short poems by E. B. White: "Commuter" and "Critic", both published in The New Yorker in 1925.

Even if you've never been to New York or aren't a fan of large cities, you will love this short listen, because it encapsulates what America is: the melting pot of the world, a place where every culture, every taste, every talent is embraced and appreciated, recognized and celebrated. What a wonderful piece of literature!

An essay, more than a book or a story, this is a perfect accompaniment to a short evening walk through any city. White does a wonderful job drawing a picture of one of the earths greatest cities and its inhabitants. I loved this.

Having lived in New York City for the past 12 years, this book has reframed the city for me in seemingly obvious but profound ways. A great read for NYC residents, visitors, or anyone else.

A Glimpse Into NY in 1949

I loved it with the familiar distant past and eerie present all wrapped into one. The bones of New York remain the same as the City and it’s neighborhoods continue to change, grow and occasionally return to it’s/their roots. I have a bias for the author as the Trumpet of the Swan was my favorite childhood book.
