About this listen

In print for over 50 years, One Man's Meat continues to delight listeners with E. B. White's witty, succinct observations on daily life at a Maine saltwater farm.

Too personal for an almanac, too sophisticated for a domestic history, and too funny and self-doubting for a literary journal, One Man's Meat can best be described as a primer of a countryman's lessons and a timeless recounting of experience that will never go out of style.

Surprisingly Applicable to Contemporary Life

E.B. White was much more than the author of Charlotte's Web. His essays for adults are as sharp, funny, and perceptive today as they were in the first years of World War II, when Americans were also trying make up their minds who their enemies were and how to make a living. This is a nice reading, well worth a listen.

I wish more people would read this book.

this book is very entertaining and memorable. part philosophy and part journal, with wonderful dry sense of humor.
it gives a window into life in America in 1940;such a short time ago really, but so much has changed.

A must ...

I fall far from the tree when it comes to my mother’s unrelenting live for the written word! I now understand why she adores this author!

Wonderful and Worth a Listen

I've just discovered EB White and I'm hooked! I buying everything he ever wrote, In book form, Audible and Kindle. My favorite so far is this and his Dog book. I had to order a copy from Half Price books across Country and can't wait to get my hands on it. He won all the awards even receiving the Presidential Metal of Freedom for his writings.
If you love dogs and farm animals you will love his writings. I haven't read his childrens books yet. I love his adult style of storytelling. Those are hard to find so get them while you can. Keep them for your children and Grandchildren too.

A great escape from today...and yet

so many relatable thoughts about then, that gave me peace about now. I will listen to this one again...and probably another time..or two, pure joy. I laughed outloud many times at his sly sense of humor. I'm also going to look for more titles that are read by this narrator. Perfection.

Should be required reading! A common sense approach to life; a call for decency; what we can learn from previous times.

Somehow, in the early stages of WWII, E.B. White was able to predict the progression of society and politics of America and the world. There are many nuggets of profound and universal truths in this book that, if lived, would make our lives and our world a much more peaceful and tolerant place. This book should be required reading!

Sometimes we forget

I wasn’t even born when this was written, but E. B. White’s stories were a great window into a time many are forgetting. I appreciate his observations not only of the world events he reported on, but also the day-to-day goings on at his farm. Without books like this we are prone to forget that times were tough, folks worked hard and we were united in our disgust of bullies.

A friend indeed!

Few literary figures are as approachable and endearing as E. B. White. He wrote gracefully about New York life, literary lights of the times, life on his Maine farm, faraway historical events, his impossible dogs, and of course, about the art and craft of writing. This collection of essays, perfectly narrated, is like a reunion with a favorite uncle, who happens to be famous and accomplished but who seems somehow oblivious to the fact.
