Story: Payton (h), a cat-shifter princess, has spent most of her life besting the over-protective palace guards to enjoy moments of wild freedom. When a mysterious stranger, Nyle (H), arrives spouting conspiracies about her people's future, she's sure he needs a one-way trip to medical supervision. However, he knows intimate things about her, and when one of his warnings turns real and takes them captive, Payton is made a believer. The story features romance, humor, and suspense and has a well-paced storyline that keeps the reader engaged from start to finish, as Payton, Nyle, and her cyborg friend, Yevgen, share action and adventures together. The characters are well-crafted, with great personalities and problems that are resolved as they evolve in the story. The book is a standalone, full-length shifter romance and can technically be read without the need for prior knowledge of the series, but you'll have a much better reading experience having read the rest of the series as there are so many ongoing issues that have been building, as well as past characters and their relationships.

Audio: Narrator Michael Ferraiuolo's tone and character voices bring each personality to life, making the story more engaging and immersive. He does a really great job with Nyle and other male voices, and a good job with Payton's voice - I personally prefer a female narrator is used to voice female voices. His clear pacing and engaging voice make for an enjoyable listening experience. The audio quality is good and there were no issues.

Payton's Story

Princess Payton, who doesn’t act much like a princess, has sneaked passed the palace guards again and has come to Shelter City to visit her friend. Yevgen has captured the attention of the Federation. He has a habit of being overly curious in databases he shouldn’t be in. Nyle, a Cysgodian scientist and Yevgen’s creator, arrives at the same time as mercenaries do. The three of them are captured. They manage to thwart the mercenaries and end up being rescued by Her mother’s old crew. Somehow, with all that is going on, Payton and Nyle are drawn to each other. There is more trouble with the Federation and the race to get to the virus and destroy it. Action-packed and suspenseful, Payton’s story is an edge-of-your-seat adventure. It is also a great romance with a little hitch thrown in.
The characters, old and new, are fantastic. Is there a happy ending? Oh, yeah, in more ways than one. The story is brought to life by the talented Michael Ferraiuolo.

The ending in this book out did my expectations

Is this the last in this series? Surely not! Although I can say that the ending in this book out did my expectations, it was surprising but perfect in every way. I keep thinking of the timeline that the cyborg"s plan took, I mean when, how did the plan evolve, was it remotely after the planet event? Sure maybe I think too much but as a reader I have been along for the ride from the first book and even series before and Michelle mean't for us to become attached to these characters. I keep replaying the audiobook to pick up on every detail that is brilliantly narrated by Michael Ferraiuolo , this story is perfect, I love it, Thank You Michelle M Pillow

I adore this series!

I have loved Payton throughout this series and was so glad to finally get to read her book! I was not disappointed and I loved all the witty banter through the whole book!
Fantastic audio narration that is a perfect fit to this story made for a truly enjoyable read!

The One We’ve Been Waiting For!

It’s Payton’s turn, but oh boy, it’s not an easy road to happily ever after. First, Nyle, a Cysgidian science who is not part of Shelter City, bumps into Payton on the path, where he speaks in irritating riddles, then he insults Yevgen, Payton’s cyborg half-mate/husband (wait, what!) and from there, the real trouble starts with kidnapping! Oh, the anguish when Nyle felt that he should be held responsible for what happened on Cysgod, even if it meant his death, left me upset! And the tension… the building tension … ahhh! Once again, Michael Ferraiuolo does an amazing job of bringing a unique style and individuality to this audiobook. The second generation of Qurilixen rulers are an exciting group, and I’m head over heels loving their stories, but Payton’s is my new favourite!

Her Lawless Prince book 5 in the Qurilixen Lords series by Michelle M. Pillow is the next generation of Qurilixen royal family. I love Payton's fire, her spirit and her acerbic tongue! I loved this story, it has a bit of everything that we have come to depend on from Ms. Pillow drama, intrigue, witty, strong well written characters and a wonderful world that I love coming back to time and again!! Michael Ferraiuolo does a wonderful job narrating these characters and bringing them to life for me! I really enjoyed his engaging tone it made it such a good listening experience.

I Enjoyed It

I really enjoyed this book. Good world building. The story was interesting from the start. I liked both Payton and Nyle. I loved that Payton was a cat shifter princess not some damsel, and after 98% of the heroines I read being human, it was a nice change of pace. The story had action, suspense, and danger. Michael Ferraiuolo did a great job bringing these characters to life. All had distinct voices. Yevgen was an interesting on and I love how Michael did his voice.

Don’t Ignore the Man Behind the Curtain!

This talented author has written several series that are a part of the Qurilixen world. While this isn't my favorite series by her—that would be her Space Lords series about a surprisingly noble pirate crew—this one is still deliciously complex with excellent characters and makes you think about so many things worth pondering, like our views on what makes a group of humans (or other creatures) civilized and our sometimes uneasy relationship with technology and things like AI. Throughout this series, the author has made us understand the complex relationship between three groups of creatures, shifters and humanoids, that make up this particular planet. It's certainly an uneasy relationship between the two sets of shifters—dragon and cat—who have lived on different parts of the planet for generations as well as a third group who are relatively recent refugees finding safe haven on this planet because their home world had become poisoned. There's also a fourth group of humans or humanoids—not sure which—in the mix who kind of act like a galaxy overlord almost in the style of the Republic in the Star Wars world.

In this installment of the series, we--along with the inhabitants of this planet—learn what this Republic-like entity has done that has massively affected so many, much to their detriment. The reader always got to sense in the prior works of this series that something was not quite right about this group, and in this book, we finally learn of their truly dastardly deeds. This book is also a complex romance, with what appears to be a love triangle—not my favorite romantic trope, but I trust this author, so I kept going despite my dislike of that. But what makes this triangle more interesting is that one member of it is actually a cyborg, mostly an intelligent machine but with some human-replicated organs and intelligence given to him by the machine's creator. Interestingly, the other male in the triangle is that creator! What I absolutely love, and I don't want to give too much away, was how the machine-man actually had a deep understanding of human emotion, including love, even if it really couldn't feel those emotions (but it did a good job of pretending to). How the cyborg is portrayed in this certainly makes you think of what the future of AI and more responsive robots could be, both for good and ill. I like how the author also made the cyborg humorous at times; let’s just say he can take himself a little too seriously … which can be funny for humans to see!

I haven't described all this book is about, as it is incredibly complex, but if what I've said above intrigues you, it is certainly worth checking out. This author is one of my go-to SPF authors. She's fantastic with characterization and creates a complex world that is easily understandable and always a delight to spend a few hours with. This is book 5 in this particular series, and I definitely recommend starting with the first book so you better understand the history and complex interactions between all the races in this world. Highly recommended.

Entertaining

Audiobook review: Enjoyable and entertaining story. Strong female lead and strong mysterious male. Plenty of action and palpable smexual tension with a side on tension, suspense, humor, & with dialogue. The narrator did a nice job! I received a free copy of this audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.
