About this listen

This program is read by acclaimed English actor Richard Armitage.

Leningrad, Russia, 1968.

From an early age, it is clear that Alexander Karpenko is destined to lead his countrymen. But when his father is assassinated by the KGB for defying the state, Alexander and his mother will have to escape Russia if they hope to survive. At the docks, they have an irreversible choice: board a container ship bound for America or one bound for Great Britain. Alexander leaves the choice to a toss of a coin....

In a single moment, a double twist decides Alexander’s future. During an epic tale, spanning two continents and 30 years, we follow Alexander through triumph and defeat as he sets out on parallel lives as Alex in New York and Sasha in London. As this unique story unfolds, both come to realize that to find their destiny, they must face the past they left behind as Alexander in Russia.

With a final twist that will shock even his most ardent fans, this is international number one best seller Jeffrey Archer’s most ambitious and creative work since Kane and Abel.

The two stories were good. The ending was ridiculous. It should have ended that it was all a dream and the crate was sunk.

It is not our own abilities who show who we are,
it is our choices! Dumbledore.

Interesting way to tell a story.

This audio book had me glued to my phone for 3 days. I still don’t get how there could be two real Karpenkos at the same time .....but that end had me laughing my head off. I really wasn’t expecting that. Did I want more? Yes! But what else can one expect from Mr. Archer.

What an end!!!

Usually love Archer’s books, but this was very confusing to listen to due to plot & switching characters back & forth. It may have been better if read.

Confusing

Brilliant performance by Richard Armitage making the story twice as good as it would otherwise have been.

A great romp from Lord Archer

After his father was murdered while trying to start a trade union in Russia, Alexander and his mother were given the opportunity to escape to a new life. They were given two choices, England or the United States. With the toss of a coin, the choice is made. This is where the story spits into a "what if" scenario. In one choice they go to England, where Alexander becomes Sasha, and he and his mother create new lives for themselves. In the second story, Alex and his mother move to the United States to start over. The story follows the lives of these two men and how they gained power and prestige over the years. The two lives come together when they both decide to return to Russia to run for President. The story was intriguing and nicely paced. Richard Armitage was an excellent performer in this story.

Jeffrey Archer always writes an exceptional book and this one was at the top. His ability to keep two separate stories going at the same time, yet interwoven, is unparalleled. Always love reading his books and can't wait for the next read.

Exceptional, as always
