Publisher's summary
Discover the original novel set in the Halo universe, based on the New York Times bestselling video game series!
It’s been three months since the colony world of Meridian was invaded by the alien theocratic alliance known as the Covenant. Under the close watch of the military, teenagers Evie, Dorian, Saskia, and Victor have been put into an accelerated training program with ONI, the Office of Naval Intelligence. And to the quartet’s surprise, ONI has a mission for them: return to their hometown on Meridian and monitor the Covenant’s efforts to retrieve an ancient Forerunner artifact of untold power.
But what seems like a simple job quickly spirals out of their control. With the artifact at risk of falling into Covenant hands, the stakes are raised, and ONI tasks the teens and their team of militia fighters with extracting the artifact for study. After a series of missteps with command, the group must take matters into their own hand, journeying far behind enemy lines and into the heart of the war zones on a ravaged Meridian.

Story
Ryland Grace is the sole survivor on a desperate, last-chance mission - and if he fails, humanity and the Earth itself will perish. Except that right now, he doesn't know that. He can't even remember his own name, let alone the nature of his assignment or how to complete it. All he knows is that he's been asleep for a very, very long time. And he's just been awakened to find himself millions of miles from home, with nothing but two corpses for company.

Ataegina was an isolated world of medieval castles, varied cultures, and conquests, vibrant until the demons rose and spread relentless destruction. Swarms of lethal creatures with black husks, murderous claws, barbed tails, and dreaded “tooth-tongues” raged through the lowlands, killing 90 percent of the planet’s population. Terrified survivors fled to hidden mountain keeps where they eke out a meager existence. When a trio of young warriors discovers a new weapon, they see a chance to end this curse. These kids whine too much
It’s honestly better than the first book, but not by much. The kids constant whining towards the end gets to be a bit much. I find myself yelling at them while listening haha. Granted they are put into a not so great situation but against the backdrop of the war as a whole I don’t feel much sympathy of any for them.

An imperfect follow up.
The book does a better job of feeling more like a halo book but it loses some of the strengths of the first book. The characters lose their plot armor which is good. But they aren't as personable in this book. Again Dorian feels like the most realistic character of the four and has the best voice actor. Owen is a brick in this one, which is fine. But he wasn't in the last book.
Victor definitely got the development he lacked in the first book but it doesn't really get as good of development as the others did. We need to see more into that character's thoughts and motivations. Evie and Saskia don't get as much development as they did in the first one, but thag is fine. Both were touched on and most of their character building was done in the first book.
In short, the story is more believable for a halo book but still feels a bit weird. All and all though, I enjoyed it. It was a charming little foray into ONI shenanigans and how less informed characters handle thing in the halo universe. I look forward to a possible continuation of this story.

Good and different
I like the fact that it’s different than the other books, it goes into the civilian struggle and I like it, the first book was a lot better but the second one really wasn’t far off either

Writing feels lazy
Motivations, characters, thoughts all feel lazy and poorly put together. There’s a good section of them just being angry because of a small lie.
