About this listen

Nineteen-year-old Karis has been blind since birth, but for some reason, she can see through the wall of smoke that separates the human lands from those of the Faeries that rule in grand courts on the other side. Most of the time, the only thing she can see on the other side of the wall is the swipe of a tail or the trailing of a bony hand along the surface. But one day, a handsome faerie appears and sweeps her away into his world, a world that is being ravaged by an evil so dark and deadly, she fears she may never see her home again.

Loftin is a bounty hunter and he has been searching for Karis since she went missing from the Court of Ash. He needs to return her and collect the ransom. But the longer they travel together and the more he teaches her about what she is now able to see, the more difficult he finds the thought of letting her go. A fiery passion ignites between them, but with a monster tracking their every move, they must find a way to reach the Court of Ash before it kills them both.

Enjoyable, unusual fairytale retelling

I really enjoyed this author’s unusual retelling of Snow White (minus the dwarves), and I loved the narration of the audiobook. The plot and characters draw you in right from the beginning, plus pair that with the excellent narration and you are kept engrossed right to the end. It takes you on an adventure that has evil Fae, monsters, secrets, betrayal, romance and magic. Karis is a great character, she faces adversity with determination, kindness and strength. There are lots of surprises, twists and action in this story and Loftin adds a nice touch of hotness and romance to it. The narrator really brought the book to life, she gave the characters individual personalities and did both male and females voices equally well. This is a fast passed, enjoyable fairytale retelling that was a pleasure to listen to.

Such a great story!

This was such a neat twist on Snow White! Just a pinch of it added with the magic mirror and sending someone to cut out her heart. Karis is the daughter of the Queen and when the Queen realizes Karis has more power than her, she sends a Huntsman to kill her. But someone else intervenes to save her. He glamoured her and sent her to live with the humans.

10 years later, Karis believes she's human and reenters Faerie to save her brother. She meets Loftin and they set out to save Erik. What Karis doesn't know is that Loftin is the latest huntsman sent to find her and return her to the Queen. With everything in Faerie trying to kill her, how will she ever find her way through this and still live to tell the tale?

Complex Plot

Intriguing world building with a complex plot and likable characters. This Snow White retelling has fae, hidden identity and powers, and plenty of delicious men to captive the readers from beginning to conclusion. The queen was oh so terrible and perfectly executed.

Could have been a great series

It was too fast in some parts and too slow in others. Things were unclear in the story itself and I feel like if she made this into a series it would give more time to explain some things. It just felt like these random things were thrown in throughout the book.

Could have been better

The story was a great premise. The flow of the story seem to stutter in areas. The narrator was ho-hum. It could have been much better. Loved that the story was all wrapped up.
