About this listen

An addictive debut thriller about the mysterious death of a small-town golden girl and the secret lives of three people connected to her: the social misfit who loved her from afar, the rebellious girl who despised her, and the policeman investigating her death.

As morning dawns in a sleepy Colorado suburb, a dusting of snow covers high school freshman Lucinda Hayes' dead body on a playground carousel. As accusations quickly spread, Lucinda's tragic death draws three outsiders from the shadows.

Oddball Cameron Whitley loved - still loves - Lucinda. Though they've hardly ever spoken, and any sensible onlooker would call him Lucinda's stalker, Cameron is convinced that he knows her better than anyone. Completely untethered by the news of her death, Cameron's erratic behavior provides the town ample reason to suspect that he's the killer.

Jade Dixon-Burns hates Lucinda. Lucinda took everything from Jade: her babysitting job and her best friend. The worst part was Lucinda's blissful ignorance to the damage she'd wrought.

Officer Russ Fletcher doesn't know Lucinda, but he knows the kid everyone is talking about, the boy who may have killed her. Cameron Whitley is his ex-partner's son. Now Russ must take a painful journey through the past to solve Lucinda's murder and keep a promise he made long ago.

Girl in Snow investigates the razor-sharp line between love and obsession and will thrill fans of Everything I Never Told You and Luckiest Girl Alive. Intoxicating and intense, this is a novel you will not be able to pause.

Critic reviews

"An exciting debut from a talented new voice. Girl in Snow is a propulsive mystery set in a suburban community marked by unsettling voyeurism. Danya Kukafka patiently reveals layers of her characters' inner lives - their ugliness and vulnerabilities - in prose that sparkles and wounds. I couldn't put this one down." (Brit Bennett, New York Times best-selling author of The Mothers)

Stay with it

This was a hard one to follow. I lost focus many times and had to rewind and listen to passages a few times. It did not hold my attention well. With an hour or so to go, it becomes more clear!

Sorry, but WHO are these teenagers??!!!

Maybe I was just a dimwitted teen, but I have NEVER known anyone at the purported age of the two main teenage characters with this depth of thought, breadth of knowledge, or such long-winded internal dialogues. If you can buy that all of that verbosity and those incredibly intense/convoluted narratives come from teenage minds, then you will enjoy it more. I just don't buy it. It made it hard to connect to them or even like them much. Thinking they both need some serious in-patient therapy, psychotic weirdos.

YA mystery

Expected something more mature; probably enjoyable read for high school students. Story told from multiple points of view, at least two of which are teenagers...

Couldn't even finish it

The plot was just so hard to get into. It felt meandering and I just wasn't invested in finding anything out. Maybe it gets a lot better in the 2nd half, but I didn't finish it.

Couldn't finish it

The character development didn't make sense or it took to long. I lost interest mid way through. Wanted to know how it ended but could listen anymore. It wasn't going anywhere. Or if it was I could hold out much longer. It was a shame too, wanted to like it.

horrible, boring, disappointing

I was so disappointed that this book was so bad because it sounded sooooooo good from the synopsis! Unfortunately it was a huge letdown, and I found myself relieved to be finished. The book was super slow, boring, and anticlimactic. Whoever voiced Jade in the book was AWFUL! She spoke in this weird low voice that made her sound waaaaay older and it was so annoying. Avoid this book!!!

Expected More

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

NO - I skipped to the end to get it over with.

What was most disappointing about Danya Kukafka’s story?

Too many words which made the story move slowly. A lot of filler.

Did the narration match the pace of the story?

I liked all the voices except the one for "Cameron".

Was Girl in Snow worth the listening time?

Not for me.

Very Dark

The characters and story line are very dark and disturbing in this story. It may do a good job depicting some teen struggles but I personally didn’t enjoy the book.
It has a heart lifting ending if you can call it that.
Don’t read it if your depressed!

Boring

Underdeveloped characters & story. Left the listener not caring one way or the other. Instead of being excited to get back to it, I often forgot about it. Not helped by monotonous readers.
