About this listen

Coming home dredges up deeply buried secrets in The Survivors, a thrilling mystery by New York Times best-selling author Jane Harper.

Kieran Elliott's life changed forever on the day a reckless mistake led to devastating consequences.

The guilt that still haunts him resurfaces during a visit with his young family to the small coastal community he once called home.

Kieran's parents are struggling in a town where fortunes are forged by the sea. Between them all is his absent brother, Finn.

When a body is discovered on the beach, long-held secrets threaten to emerge. A sunken wreck, a missing girl, and questions that have never washed away....

A Macmillan Audio production from Flatiron Books

"[Harper is] a master at creating atmospheric settings, and it’s easy to fall under her spell.... A layered and nuanced mystery.” (Kirkus)

“As always, Harper skillfully evokes the landscape as she weaves a complicated, elegant web, full of long-buried secrets ready to come to light.” (New York Times Book Review)

This author has become one of my favorites. And Stephen Shanahan narration is amazing...again. This book was just released yesterday and already, I can’t wait for the next one. I have listened to the previous 3 books twice, and I will be listening to this one again.

Jane Harper did again

I think a third of this book could have been edited out. The author goes on quite a bit about everything making the story drag a bit at times. The biggest challenge for me was that there were 16 characters! Hard to keep track of who was who. I eventually started a cheat sheet and wished I had done so sooner, as it was a huge help. Let me help you with a basic cast of characters:

Verity and Brian Elliott – two sons: Kieran and Finn
Trish Birch – two girls: Olivia and Gabby
Toby Gilroy - friends with Finn and Gabby
Mia – Kieran’s partner - they have a child named Audrey
Sean - friend of Kieran's
Julian - restaurant owner
Bronte' - restaurant server
G.R. Barnum – author who moved from Sydney
Wren (sp?) local policeman
Sue Pendlebury - policewoman

Good story, but slow to develop

The isolated Tasmania coast community was rocked by a tragic storm 12 years earlier. Now grief and guilt from those events boil over setting family against family and friend against friend. The Survivors started more slowly than previous books by Jane Harper. But as I got through it I realized this gave her the time to peel back the layers of the characters more dramatically. This built to one of her most riveting endings yet and made it all worthwhile.

Best Psychological Thriller in past year

Tedious. That’s all I can say. A murder mystery that drags on and on. Characters that don’t interest you. And narrators heavy Aussie accent. G’day you all.

Is it over??

Ever listened to a book that was so good that you don’t even want to start another because it couldn’t possibly be as good? That’s where I am right now.
I’ve read most of Harper’s books but this is the first audiobook of hers that I’ve listened to. I was quickly and completely absorbed in the story. Shanahan’s narration was wonderful. Such an excellent delivery without the odd character voice changes that many authors make narrators do. 5 stars across the board.

Amazing Storytelling

Second book I have listened to by Jane Harper and enjoyed them both equally.
Off to find another.

Totally enjoyable book

What makes Harper’s books so incredible is the atmosphere. I’m not one for long scenery descriptions that disrupt a books flow. But the environment is another character and getting to know it intimately is what makes these thrillers. The Dry is still my favorite, because it’s so sinister. But this one has beautiful themes of hope and redemption that I loved. Stephen Shanahan is incomparable.

Another 5 Star

The characters and storyline were fantastic! The undercurrent of past hurts, bad behavior and changes from life lessons were in full display. Would recommend.

Another high energy story

So much talking, not too much action. I struggled to finish the book, it was boring and everyone in the story kept talking but never talking about anything that was part of the "mystery". The narrator had parts where it was incredibly hard to hear while others were very loud.

boooooring

Jane Harper & Stephen Shanahan make a TERRIFIC PAIR!! the narrator's voice instantly transports me to Australia, i can't wait for Jane's next book & I'm going to research any other books Stephen has narrated. Thank you for bringing this great read to life. Sincerely, Liz Jardine

What a wild ride!!
