About this listen
Like many others on the autism spectrum, 20-something stand-up comic Michael McCreary has been told by more than a few well-meaning folks that he doesn’t “look” autistic. But, as he’s quick to point out in this memoir, autism “looks” different for just about everyone with autism spectrum disorder (ASD).
Diagnosed with ASD at age five, McCreary got hit with the performance bug not much later. During a difficult time in junior high, he started journaling, eventually turning his pain into something empowering - and funny. He scored his first stand-up gig at age 14 and hasn't looked back.
This unique and hilarious #OwnVoices memoir breaks down what it’s like to live with autism for readers on and off the spectrum. Funny, You Don’t Look Autistic is an invaluable and compelling listen for young readers with ASD looking for voices to relate to as well as for listeners hoping to broaden their understanding of ASD.

Story
What is autism: a lifelong disability or a naturally occurring form of cognitive difference akin to certain forms of genius? In truth, it is both of these things and more - and the future of our society depends on our understanding it. Wired reporter Steve Silberman unearths the secret history of autism, long suppressed by the same clinicians who became famous for discovering it, and finds surprising answers to the crucial question of why the number of diagnoses has soared in recent years.

Autism is a childhood condition...right? Not right. Children with autism grow into adults with autism. The great strides we have made in understanding childhood autistic behaviors and interventions have lagged dramatically behind the needs of aging autistics.

Story
With a reporter’s eye and an insider’s perspective, Eric Garcia shows what it’s like to be autistic across America. Garcia began writing about autism because he was frustrated by the media’s coverage of it; the myths that the disorder is caused by vaccines, the narrow portrayals of autistic people as white men working in Silicon Valley. His own life as an autistic person didn’t look anything like that.

Autism—that’s being able to count matches really fast and knowing that 7 August 1984 was a Tuesday, right? Well, no. In this book, Bianca Toeps explains in great detail what life is like when you’re autistic. She does this by looking at what science says about autism (and why some theories can go straight in the trash), but also by telling her own story and interviewing other autistics.

Ever since he was small, John Robison had longed to connect with other people, but by the time he was a teenager, his odd habits, an inclination to blurt out non sequiturs, avoid eye contact, dismantle radios, and dig five-foot holes, had earned him the label "social deviant". No guidance came from his mother or his father. It was no wonder he gravitated to machines, which could, at least, be counted on.

From childhood, Laura James knew she was different. She struggled to cope in a world that often made no sense to her, as though her brain had its own operating system. It wasn't until she reached her 40s that she found out why: Suddenly and surprisingly, she was diagnosed with autism. With a touching and searing honesty, Laura challenges everything we think we know about what it means to be autistic. Married with four children and a successful journalist, Laura examines the ways in which autism has shaped her career, her approach to motherhood, and her closest relationships.

Let’s face it: we all want a seat at the cool table, a great job, and loads of money. But most of us won’t be able to achieve this widely accepted, black-or-white, definition of winning, which makes us feel like failures, that we’re destined to a life of loserdom. That’s the conventional wisdom. It’s also crap, according to comedian and cult hero Chris Gethard, who knows a thing of two about losing. Failing is an art form, he argues; in fact, it’s the only the way we’re ever going to discover who we are, what we really want, and how to live the kind of life we only dreamed about.

Autism—that’s being able to count matches really fast and knowing that 7 August 1984 was a Tuesday, right? Well, no. In this book, Bianca Toeps explains in great detail what life is like when you’re autistic. Autism therapy typically focuses on ridding individuals of “autistic” symptoms such as difficulties interacting socially, problems in communicating, sensory challenges, and repetitive behavior patterns. Now Dr. Barry M. Prizant offers a new and compelling paradigm: The most successful approaches to autism don’t aim at fixing a person by eliminating symptoms, but rather seeking to understand the individual’s experience and what underlies the behavior. Rather than curb these behaviors, it’s better to enhance abilities, build on strengths, and offer supports.

Hilarious and Insightful
I have been following the Facebook page for Funny, You Don't Look Autistic for the memes before I realized it was the name of Michael McCreary's book. I recently found out my kid is on the spectrum so it really helped hearing the experience from an adult with ASD. It was really entertaining too. I'm going to go listen to his stand up.

Can’t wait to hear more from this talent.
My 16 year-old son also had ASD, and we first heard Mike perform at an Asperger Experts workshop. I couldn’t spend my audible credit fast enough last night and we started listening today on the long drive home from school. Lots of laugh out loud moments so far and the kids are begging to listen to more. Thanks for being a voice (and several characters) for the ASD community!

good book
other than the stuff about temple Grandin and using the word " aspie" I thought it was pretty good. the ending broke my heart though. as an autistic and parent of an autistic kid , the ending is so sad. I almost broke ďown and cried

not complicated to understand
My primary language is spanish, Michael talks very well, very easy to understand (if you know english, obviously) the story, comments, explanations aren't complicated to understand too, it's easy to have empathy with him.
I love your mother, hated Harold and happy to know about your path is quite inspirational to hear

Colors of the spectrum
Succeeds in challenging the stereotype of what most NTs may imagine what people with a spectrum disorder are" like." That is, there is none..."they" are just as different as neurotypicals, classified for certain traits, need for routine, communication issues ..but in the end Mc Creary shows the colors of the spectrum are as varied and nuanced as NT personality types. Hollywood should stop concentrating on the autistic savants and work harder to represent a more authentic version of those on the spectrum. Mc Creary's read was a bit too fast, raspy and edgy for my taste but I guess that's just me and my sensitive ears

Easy to listen to, funny and engaging. Easy to find visual accompaniments. Loved it. Will likely listen to it multiple times.

Great glimpse into the life.
As someone who has just been diagnosed with autism I found this very relatable yet funny.

Loved this book!
I loved reading Michael’s story. He is funny and honest. I try to read as many books as possible by autistic authors and always find the stories to be great. Thank you for sharing Michael!

Great fun and also moving story. Lots of humor!
It’s a quickie, but a good one. I very much enjoyed this book and learning about the author. I’m glad he’s doing well in the field of comedy, and I hope there are more books in his future! Great author narration, too, something that seldom is the case.
