About this listen

Stand in your liberty, or your liberty will be taken away.

Freedom Nation provides a fresh look at the story of American freedom, one that is sorely needed today. Long before the American Revolution began in 1776, disparate groups of settlers emigrated to the British North American colonies, in a quest for religious, economic, and political freedom. Scots-Irish, Puritans, Roman Catholics, Anglicans, humanists and French revolutionaries each pursued happiness in their own way.

These groups had a long history of violent conflict in Europe. Throwing them together in a new nation birthed in a Revolutionary War seemed like a recipe for disaster, possibly even genocide. Their religions and belief systems seemed incompatible, sometimes even diametrically opposed to each other.

Nevertheless, when these groups believed that their liberty was being infringed upon, they united together around a few fundamental principles of freedom, and took their stand against the most powerful empire in the world. They succeeded in building a governmental system that protected the rights and liberty of all. They built the most stable and successful constitutional republic in the world.

America today is riven by deep divisions that threaten its very existence. The answers to these problems are found in the struggles that created this nation. If America has a future, we must learn from our past.
