About this listen

#1 New York Times bestselling author Kathy Reichs returns with a twisty, unputdownable thriller featuring forensic anthropologist Temperance Brennan, who finds herself at the center of a Washington, DC, arson investigation that spawns deepening levels of mystery and, ultimately, violence.

Always apprehensive about working fire scenes, Tempe is called to Washington, DC, to analyze the victims of a deadly blaze and sees her misgivings justified. The devastated building is in Foggy Bottom, a neighborhood with a colorful past and present, and Tempe becomes suspicious about the property’s ownership when she delves into its history.

The pieces start falling into place strangely and quickly, and, sensing a good story, Tempe teams with a new ally, telejournalist Ivy Doyle. Soon the duo learns that back in the thirties and forties the home was the hangout of a group of bootleggers and racketeers known as the Foggy Bottom Gang. Though interesting, this fact seems irrelevant—until the son of a Foggy Bottom gang member is shot dead at his home in an affluent part of the district. Coincidence? Targeted attacks? So many questions.

As Tempe and Ivy dig deeper, an arrest is finally made. Then another Foggy Bottom Gang-linked property burns to the ground, claiming one more victim. Slowly, Tempe’s instincts begin pointing to the obvious: somehow, her moves since coming to Washington have been anticipated, and every path forward seems to bring with it a lethal threat.

Not the usual for Dr. Reichs

I want to preface this by saying I love Dr. Reichs and her books. However, to me, this was not the best. The plot drug in places and the usual suspense wasn’t there. That being said, I will a wait anxiously for another book. Everyone deserves an off day.

Great plot and characters. Moved along at a good pace.

I liked the background. Ivy was fun and Tempe was more fun than I remembered

Hard to put down

The story was entertaining but also historically informative. The action kept me riveted! One of her best.

Who knew?

Interesting story! I usually do not listen to mystery novels. But I actually enjoyed reading this one.

Great book

Haven’t read a Tempe book in years, but this makes me want to get back into the series.

Please Mum, May I have some more? Too easy to binge read!

Released on August 6th. Started on August 7th. Finished in August 8th. F̠i̠r̠e̠ a̠n̠d̠ B̠o̠n̠e̠s̠ (the newest book in the Temperance Brennan series by @kathyreichs . Too good to take my time!
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Why, oh why, do I do this to myself. The eagerly awaiting of a new book by a favorite author in a favorite series, the promise to “take it slow and savor it”, finally followed by a binge read that leaves chores undone and family (nearly) neglected for hours.
Forensic detail, mystery, sardonic humor, well fleshed out characters, and perfectly satisfying descriptors… I can’t get enough.
Now … when’s the next one? 📚

The OG Bones.

Loved going back to to the original. It's been a while for me, but worth the wait.

The Audible performance was great

Excellent as always, but not my favorite of Ms. Reich's books. Had so many decades of family history of the various culprits to wade through that it became a bit tedious. There were also not enough actually likable characters. Even some of the good guys were not particularly endearing. Still was a great mystery, though.

Dr. Reichs is on FIRE

I’ve read all of Dr. Reichs books (including a forensic textbook), and have always enjoyed them. The only thing disappointing about all of them is that they are WAY TOO SHORT! I’m thinking something more around the 20+ hour read. 40 would be ideal…
