About this listen

Raina Bretton is a rag woman in London's East End when a handsome stranger appears in a dank alley and offers her a glittering smile and a chance for adventure. Rothburne Abbey has a unique position for her, one that will take her away from her hardscrabble life and give her a chance to be a lady. Things she could only dream of might be coming true. But some dreams turn out to be nightmares.

Though Raina has traded squalor for silk and satin, something about the abbey is deeply unsettling. As she wrestles with her true identity, the ruin, decay, and secrets she finds at the heart of the old mansion tear at her confidence and threaten to reveal her for who she really is. Only one man stands between her and the danger that lurks within - and only if he decides to keep her biggest secret hidden.

I think I could have loved the story

I think this is a good read… But it’s hard for me to say because the narration is absolutely ruining it for me. I slowed it down tremendously and that helped but the narrator is speaking the voices of an old lady and an old grumpy smoker instead of two young lovers and a beautiful rich evil man. It completely ruined the story

Feel-good story

I like this author's writing--a little mystery, romance, morals/Christian faith, character development. The other book that I have read from her was similar in premise and protagonist. The narrator did a good job but her voice didn't match the protagonist. She has an older lady voice and the main character is a 21 yr old woman. That was off-putting in a way, but she did a great job with accents.

Fabulous

This story went all kinds of places I didn't expect. As Reigna the rag woman becomes the lady of the mannor she is plunged into a world of intrigue and multiple deceptions. Her pretense actually helps her discover the person she was always meant to be.
A truly deterable villain, a likable hero and heroine, and intersting plot made this a page turner. I enjoyed the hours spent listening to this book.

Gravelly voice

The reader was good for general narration and the women’s voices. When she read the men’s parts it was so gravelly I almost ended the book. Not pleasant.
The story itself was intriguing! So many twists to the plot.

very entertaining story

I really liked this one!!
Story does weave enough to keep you interested.
Narrator has only one voice for all males so you have to pay attention to which male is speaking but her accents are really good IMO.

Riveting from beginning to end

If I were reading the physical book, I would say I could not put it down? As it is, I could barely turn off the audio. I got so caught up in the story line and characters that I felt like I was there in the shadows. Well written and well performed. Definitely 5 stars on all accounts.

My Fair Lady reimagined- so wonderful!

I listened from start to finish in one sitting. This is an adventure story I'd love to see in a theater. Looking for more books with Raina's adventurous spirit.

Excellent story and narration

This is a talented author. It is a mystery with godly principles intertwined. It is a story to be told and retold. I hope it delights readers as much as it did me.

Good Story

I really like the story. The mystery element is intriguing without feeling rote. I also love the loyalty element between the main character and her gent. The male voices are difficult to listen to. They’re more of a growl than a speaking voice and it gets irritating after a while. Most of the female voices are great which helps. Overall, it’s a good, clean mystery/romance.
