About this listen

When struggling riverboat captain Abner Marsh receives an offer of partnership from a wealthy aristocrat, he suspects something’s amiss. But when he meets the hauntingly pale, steely-eyed Joshua York, he is certain. For York doesn’t care that the icy winter of 1857 has wiped out all but one of Marsh’s dilapidated fleet. Nor does he care that he won’t earn back his investment in a decade. York has his own reasons for wanting to traverse the powerful Mississippi. And they are to be none of Marsh’s concern - no matter how bizarre, arbitrary, or capricious his actions may prove.

Marsh meant to turn down York’s offer. It was too full of secrets that spelled danger. But the promise of both gold and a grand new boat that could make history crushed his resolve - coupled with the terrible force of York’s mesmerizing gaze. Not until the maiden voyage of his new sidewheeler Fevre Dream would Marsh realize he had joined a mission both more sinister, and perhaps more noble, than his most fantastic nightmare...and mankind’s most impossible dream. Here is the spellbinding tale of a vampire’s quest to unite his race with humanity, of a garrulous riverman’s dream of immortality, and of the undying legends of the steamboat era and a majestic, ancient river.

Very basic.

Wasn't crazy about it, nothing about this story stranded out to me, that being said it is easy to listen to and won't confuse you with its plot.

Cool Vap story before Vaps were cool

What made the experience of listening to Fevre Dream the most enjoyable?

I believe this book was written back in the 80's which gave me a pleasant perspective given today's popular vampire culture. Also, Ron Donachie did an AMAZING job and made the story.

Love love love this book!

Haunting mix of characters, or woven together in a great narrative along the Mississippi River. I highly recommend this book.

GRRM has done it again

George had become my favorite author through his fantasy and sci-fi epics. Fevre Dream is another one of these. George could write about anything and it would be gold. Great performance by Ron Donachie was brilliant. Highly recommended.

What would I do without you, dear Martin?

I haven’t enjoyed a book this much in a long time. It was a pleasure and I’m deeply sad it is over. Mr. Martin is a master storyteller and as usual I’m in awe of his talent.

I like it better than asoiaf.

Words fail me, this was incredible. I relished every second of it, couldn't wait to find out what happened next, cried several times. I have never felt so deeply for imaginary characters in my life. Performance was outstanding as well.

Fantastic Narrator, Great Story

Come for the author, stay for the narrator! Brilliant job not only distinguishing characters but adding to their depth with skillful accents. And at first I was worried that a Scottish voice reading the general narration would be difficult for my American ears, but it was in truth refreshing and pleasant. Raced through listening to this one!

An Unforgettable Dark Adventure

A thrilling vampire novel set aboard a nineteenth-century American steamboat!  This is one book I never saw coming, and not just because it’s less than four hundred pages long.  *Side-eye at those Fire & Ice doorstops*

My childhood spins around the Disneyland pond on the Mark Twain didn’t prepare me for how treacherous the mighty Mississippi once was.  Supernatural horror components work perfectly in this environment, (just ask Anne Rice), even when they pale in the face of American slavery—Martin’s nightmare is no white-washed chronicle of history.  The author’s luscious writing, stunning attention to detail, and magnificent characters made for an unforgettable dark adventure that I loved!

Good book from George R.R. Martin

Enjoyed this book. It’s different from his more famous fantasy novels. Probably, not quite on the level of “Thrones” and definitely, not as good as the Dunk and Egg’s.
