About this listen

For Mage Alex Verus, everything is on the line in the 10th urban fantasy novel from the nationally best-selling author of Marked.

Once, Alex Verus was a diviner trying to live quietly under the radar. Now, he's a member of the Light Council who's found success, friends...and love. But it's come with a price - the Council is investigating him, and if they find out the truth, he'll lose everything.

Meanwhile, Alex's old master, Richard Drakh, is waging a war against the Council, and he's preparing a move that will bring Alex and the life mage, Anne, under his control. Caught between Richard and the Council, Alex's time is running out. To protect those he cares for, Alex will have to become something different. Something darker....

action-packed and delivered answers

This series should be read/listened to in the order of its release. There are long ARCs, short ARCs, relationships and most of all character growth as events, friendships and developments forge Alex and his friends.

Where to begin? Alex has always wanted neutrality, and it hasn’t done him a lot of good. In fact, he has enemies on both sides. He has tried being a Keeper, and a member on the council, and for what? No one trusts him, everyone uses him, and every time we turn around someone is attempting to kill him.!

Alex has had enough as the consequences of his actions come crashing down on him. To save his friends, particularly Anne, he needs to be powerful. The tale that unfolds was intense and well written. I simply devoured it.

Gads I love Alex. Who knew diviners could be so cool? Jacka has delivered an original storyline with Alex Verus and my love for the series increases with each book. I have laughed, screamed, and held my breath. Fallen was brilliant and addictive as Alex finally manned up. And do you know what? I love this powerful version of Alex.

Color me surprised, but Richard offered sound advice and truly sees Alex and how his path has led him here.

The story has humor but also made me cry. Moments and events linked past storylines, and I love how Jacka brought things together. We get answers to questions, understand foreshadowing and get updates on key characters, particularly Alex’s friends.

Gildart Jackson narrates this series and is simply brilliant. From the different voices to the range of emotions, he elevates the series to a whole new level. He is Alex Verus.

Many threads get tied up in this book

Lots of satisfying action in this book! Old enemies get confronted, Verus stops with the passive Harry Potter imitation where he barely survives through the power of friendship and actually kicks some well deserved butt . Narrator is great as always.

Fans of Jim Butcher should devour this series

Great cast of characters, complex levels of plots that overlay and span multiple books, great balance of action, intrigue, world building, etc, and the narrator is fantastic.

This series keeps getting better and better!

I have really enjoyed this series. The character development is outstanding, the stories are new, there are interesting twists and turns along the way, and the narrator is top notch. I really enjoyed the Dresden files by Jim Butcher and the nightside by Simon Green. I am now adding this collection to my top three urban fantasy series favorites. Can’t wait for next book to come out!

I enjoyed the subtle difference in Alex's voice

When everything falls apart and things get serious, Alex's voice changes. There is no room for passivity anymore. New Alex is the monster that they all feared, but somehow they still don't understand he is a devil of their own creating.
I loved it.

No more Mr. Nice Alex

…or the one where Alex finally powers up. And when he does, he doesn’t waste any time.
This book begins the final lphase in the series, and whether Alex ultimately wins, loses, or draws: he is going there in style after this one. Of course, there is a lot of pain and some self discovery along the way.
One of the three best books in the series so far.

As usual

This series keeps going and going-in the best possible way. Every book I get I think it won’t be as engaging as the last, but each time I’m wrong. Keep reading folks, jump in, the water is always good.
